mommy is trying to learn all she can, cause me and shyloh are just little. first time she's ever had orange tabbies, says that we would be different and choose to be female orange tabbies...anything to stand out.
but she keeps reading tantalizing bits and pieces about how orange cats are different than other cats, and different than other tabbies...so far she's noticed that we DO seem somewhat more intelligent than other cats she's known, but doesn't know if that could have anything to do with our fur cover. we are tool users-made a playground out of posters, and consistently send messages while mommy is in the middle of a chat...last paw hits enter and off i go...
(best i can put it is these cats seem to have a "presence" that other cats i've had lacked...does that make sense?)

Hi Kaya wave

Here's a *fun fact* that mommy usually has posted on my page (she took it off for Christmas). It's put together from a vet's answer about female orange kitties:

**Unlike the orange male, who only needs one copy of the O gene to produce an orange coat, the female requires the O to be on both chromosomes. If she has only one O, the resulting coat color will be calico. Most, but certainly not all, orange tabby cats are male. It's about 80/20 male to female.**

I think this means that a female orangie needs to have an orange father and a mother who is either orange or calico. The male orange cat only needs one orange parent.

So, yes, we orangie girls are very special and uncommon, but not rare. (A male calico is rare and one who is able to reproduce is very, very rare).

Two orangie girls in the same litter is even more uncommon. So you two are even more extra special! smile

And as for intelligence and *presence* -- yep! we are above average there too. I'm not surprised that you're both smart. Orange kitties are definitely unique and have very colorful purrsonalities.

wave of course yo're smart & extra special! You're Orangie Girls!!! cheer MOL
mama says it's kind of like redhead people...there are many more blondes & brunettes than reds, but with us kitties there are more nn-orangies than orangies (not that you could tell by BOCU memebership MOL)
"Estimates say that only 4% of the human population carries the red hair gene. As if this wasn’t bad enough, red hair is also recessive.

Recessive means you have to have two copies of a certain version of a gene to show a trait. (Remember, we have two copies of most of our genes—one from mom and one from dad.) So this means that of the 4% who have the red hair gene, an even smaller percentage actually have red hair.

The gene that causes red hair is called MC1R (melanocortin 1 receptor). No matter what your hair color, everyone has this gene..." (from thetech.org in a section about genetics)

i was just wondering, because these two are, bar none, the most interesting, infuriating, hilarious, intelligent, puzzling,distinctive...unique doesn't cover it...these cats are more themselves at just past two months than some cats i've known were in their teens...they are so...i don't knowshrugevery day it's something new and slightly bizarre. they've learned the one exact button on the power strip that disconnects the modem from all three computers. kaya is trying to learn to drink from a straw...we're hoping that when she learns it will startle her enough that she'll stop. shyloh will not allow anyone to touch her frogs...very particular about frogs...shrugthey've scaled every surface in the house...we think they're after the ceiling itself, that's all that's left. i have to sleep with a blanket over my face, because kaya always winds up on my face at some point...kneading my head and purring and sucking on the blanket. if the blanket weren't there, she would be sucking on my hair, which i find...disturbing. yes, she was weaned too early...it's still weird. i also have to keep my mouth closed when she's feeling kissy, or she will actually lick my tongue...which is just a bit too personal...shyloh goes out of her way to find dirt, and then apparently deposits it in her ears. looks like a pair of deep dark caves to nowhere...handi-wipes work...
there's just more THERE there with these two...they're a kick, they're a joy, they're incredible...but they're just a bit over two months old, and sometimes i regard the future with a touch of trepidation...eek

they're just sweet Orangie Girls! big grin most little ones are very curious about EVERYTHING so it's natural for them to explore the way they do.
Siouxsie's babysisfurone, Ayla, likes to suckle mama's pj shirt & papa's robe. mama bought her a Catsifier but she ignores it (although the 2 that were sent to the shelter A-Bomb came from had 3 orphan kittens that took to it instantly). mama found it online. it's a pillow with a furry cat shape & 4 little bottle nipples sticking out...mama thought that was a little disturbing but gave it a shot (her pj tops get soaked in the middle of the night MOL)
shyloh suckling on your hair or ears may be odd to you, but in her mind you're her mommy & she's doing what kittens naturally do. as she gets older, she might do it less OR continue to do it (Siouxsie's Auntie Louise still plucks gramma's head & Louise is almost 18 now). Siouxsie sucks a toe instead. It's a comfort thing.

Zoee

Zoee's mom here - she has a fantastic personality. She's moody, irritable, doesn't meow but instead chirps and grumbles, is very specific about her toys (she'll naw off your hand if you touch the crinkle ball while she's playing with it) and i swear if she had thumbs she'd open the front door to get out herself.

She's addicted to bass and loves classical...when I sing opera she'll sit at my feet and stare at me the whole time and chirp, and when classical is on the "big" stereo, she'll squish herself against the sub woofer to (I'm guessing) feel the base.

She also will sit and watch the entire movie "Cats and Dogs." No matter how many times she's seen it, if I put it on she's right there to watch it.

Zo is definitely special. dancing

Hi, I'm Jilly and I'm new here. It's a great topic 'cause my mom thinks I'm very different from all the other cats who have owned her. She says I am more active, playful, hungry, have a longer body, and am more bratty. Plus I have 7 toes on my front paws! I use them to swat sis Ginger, to destroy our turkey feather/leather cord toy (1 feather left!) and throw my toys across the room. I think I could turn a doorknob if I practice!
