Max

If I keep- meowing they- WILL get up!

I just stumbled upon the fact that I have a Turkish Van cat.
I have been reading all about them and realize now why Max is the way he is.
So many things now make sense!
I always wondered why he is such a different cat, more like a dog in a lot of ways! Even his fascination of water, and large size are normal.
Very social. Love to share and read about personality traits of other Turkish Van's I thought Max was just a one of a kind charactor!
Nice to meet you all.

Oh my gosh...your Max sounds just like my Simon. He is definitely more dog than cat and he never stops MEOWING! They have such distinct personalities! So nice to know I am not the only one with Mr Personality!

Thanks! kitty

Shakespeare

How high can you- jump?

That my kitty, Shakespeare, was a Turkish Van was a suprise to me, too. The first evening Shakespeare had the run of the house he tried to jump up on the kitchen counter where I was doing dishes. Not wanting to start a bad habit I didn't help him up, but within a couple of weeks, he finally made it up on his own. He immediately ran over to the sink. I had the water running and he began playing with the stream of water. I sprayed him with some water, but instead of running away, he started playing with the spray! I had never seen a cat do this. A few weeks later I took him to the vet to be neutered, and while I was there I saw a poster on the wall of purebred cats, and there he was! I had no idea he was a "breed"! When I got home I went on line and read up on Turkish Vans, and he fit the description to a "T". I'm sure he's not a purebred (he was found in a barn), but clearly some of his forebearers sweated it out in Turkey! I love all my kitties, but I'm sure you agree that Turkish Vans have incredible character - very special kitties!!!

Schnooks

Schnooks the- Bold and Blind

Schnooks is the same way. I always said he was a dog in another life. He likes to play fetch, loves to play in water, meows at the door to go out, and just plains rules the roost. Not to mention his size. He's got huge paws...LOL...which can pack a punch, lemme tell ya. One of his favorite past times is to sit on the rim of the toilet and slap at the water in the bowl. He's fascinated to watch the water swirl around when it's flushed. In the summertime, we have a kiddy pool just for him. He absolutely loves it! He'll yell at you if you take him out when he isn't ready. Needless to say, Turkish Vans are a cat all in themselves. Very loving and loyal. Our house is truly blessed to have Schnooks, the Bold and Blind.kitty

Bleu

Can I have what- your eating?

My Bleu is like that too, but only with me. She was found in a feral colony, but she wasn't feral, probably dumped off there by some irresponsible person. She is super smart and totally bratty. She does not mind baths at all and is facinated by water running down the sink. She is fixated on human foo, much like dogs, and always manages to get some one way or another. she never takes it from our plates, but if you make the mistake of tossing a half eaten piece of chicken in the kitchen trash can, she is off with it before you can say Van.

Zaynie

Bad to the Bone- MOL!!!

Purred: Tue Dec 9, '08 7:00am PST
zaynie is sooo active! He's much like your kitties. He loves to cuddle at night, by day he 'raises' the roof LOL.
At 5 1/2 months he's mastered jumping on the kitchen counter *EEK* and he loves to seek high places to take in the view. Avid climber. Loves loves water- that's how he mastered the kitchen counter hehe. I accidentally left the faucet dripping and the sound drove him to check it out.
zaynie isn't a neat freak - he leaves a trail of where he's played.
One thing about Vans I've learned is they are hard players and hard sleepers.
Never a dull moment fur shur!!!

Steppenwolf

Live to sleep

Purred: Mon Jul 13, '09 8:19pm PST
I am not too sure if Steppenwolf is a Turkish Van or part Turkish Van. He has a very distinct meow, very low and loud. I have so much to learn about him as he just arrived on July 1st in my home. He was originally adopted and his owner is now in an old folks home and I took Steppy in. He loves the bath tub that is for sure but he is also ver timid but that could be from spending a lot of time along before coming to my home. I look forward to learning more about the Vans.

oscar

i"m pushy but- it's for your- own good

all of your wonderful cats sound like my oscar, although not many have mentioned the meanness that he seems to have. at only 5 months he climbs everything in sight and if you don't watch him closely will destroy or knock over anything in his way. i'm hoping that anyone here will have some tips or a trick or two to help me with his obsession of biting my arms, i look like i play in cactus fields and he's still only a baby. i'm afraid if i don't get a hold on this now he's going to get meaner. he loves to play with my moms yorkenese, they literally run and play till they fall over panting then get up and do it all again.

Birdie

Shop Foreman

Purred: Sun Oct 18, '09 8:46pm PST
I adopted a moving refugee from the family who raised Birdie from a kitten, and none of us knew she was a Turkish Van!

She may not be purebred, but she sure acts and looks like one! It's cool to read about a cat, and then realize you already have one. I'm going to leave a basin of water out and see if she plays in it. She likes to splash in her water dish, so we'll see what she does with a shallow dishpan.

Full of character (yes) Loving (totally), Social (yep) and rather bratty (indeed!)
