Third Seizure - Cluster?

Hi, all. I'm new here. My dog, Cleo, had her first seizure "out of the blue" on May 9th. It apparently wasn't a bad one, but she did fall and her limbs got stiff and would spasm. She also foamed. It lasted about 15 minutes, including what we deduced was the post-ictal.

That was 1am, and we rushed her to an e-vet, since over the phone they said to bring her in (even though by the time we got her in the car, she had recovered.) The e-vet did a basic blood workup to check for underlying causes (sugar, liver, etc.) and the results were so good: "we don't expect to see levels this good on a three-year-old dog". So, that ruled out the possibility of treating the cause. We took her home to monitor her for 24 hours. She was tired, but otherwise fine, as you might expect.

Five months later, two hours before the exact date, on October 9th, she had her second seizure. This one was slightly longer, but otherwise the same actions. With this one, we kept thinking it was over, and she'd try to get up, but she couldn't stand and then, she'd lie back down and spasm again...this happened a few times. Afterward, she got up and ran a seemed "fine".

The last one was Saturday, and was only five weeks after the second. This one was the first one that started while we were out, in the middle of the day. She tried to get up and walk to us, but her front legs aren't steady during these seizures, and so I found her bowing. We knew exactly what was happening and the drool all over the floor upset us as to how long it had already gone on. She also pooped a little (first time that happened) before we got there. So, we stayed with her as she panted and drooled, but each time, she seems conscious for at least most of it, noticing if we put a hand in front of her face (moves her eyes) and even tries to get up and responds to our voices. She can even move her head at times to follow us if one gets up and moves. BUT, this time, every few minutes, she'd do a full body spasm and then, breathe heavier, etc., and then relax a bit, while still panting/drooling on her side. In the middle of these, she couldn't walk, but she would wag her tail voluntarily if we'd talk to her.

So, after this long post: 1. Does it seem that these were "cluster" seizures, or the post-ictal period? I'm thinking cluster because she would spasm more intensely and breathe heavier.

Q 2: I called the vet, who told me to bring her in, but when I got up to put towels in the car, she stopped. So, we decided it was less stressful for her to keep her home and let her sleep. (She hates the vet.) But, the vet said they could give her an injection of phenobarbital. Does that sound right? I didn't know they could do that.

Thanks for your time and support.

We're so sorry - sounds like Cleo (and her family) are having a rough time. My seizures are from hypothyroidism, and my big sister, Twiggy, has a brain tumor that causes her seizures, so we're not familiar with the types of seizures Cleo is experiencing. I'm sure someone will answer soon - until they do, have you checked out the canine epilepsy web site to see if they have the answer you seek? It has lots of seizure information, and has been very helpful for us. Here's the address: http://www.canine-epilepsy-guardian-angels.com Good luck - we'll keep you all in our prayers.
