We've decided to move the meet and greet picnic out of San Francisco due to the restrictions of large gatherings in the parks.

The place we've chosen is the San Francisco North KOA Kampground, 20 Rainsville Road in Petaluma, California (approx. 37 miles from SF)

We have reserved several cabins, RV sites, tent sites and lodges for the event for those of you that would like to stay a night or 2 at the meet and greet.

The reservations are for April 23 and 24 but you can arrange to stay as long as you'd like when you call the KOA Kampground to reserve.

Be sure to mention it is for the D/C MAGIC group when you call.

If you are just coming for the day of the picnic there is a "guest fee" to use the KOA campground- adults $7, kids 4-17. Kids 3 and under are free.

Looks like there are quite a few parks in the are that are dog friendly. If anyone has been to the other parks can you tell us something about them?

Here is a site explaining the rules and regs for dogs in Golden Gate National Recreation Areas, including Crissy Field:

Golden Gate National Recreation Area - Pets

They explain the "Voice Control" areas, the "On Leash" areas, and the "No Dogs" areas. Dogs have to be leashed in picnic areas, parking lots, and the wildlife protection area of the beach.

No dogs allowed at the Crissy Field Tidal Marsh.

San Francisco is very dog friendly, but in my experience, the National Park Service is very serious with their rules in regard to pets in federal recreation areas. It's very important that we all understand where our pets can and cannot go. I don't think it should scare us away from using Crissy Field though...it sounds like a great place to have our meetup!

Glen Canyon Park is the one with the gophers!
These all sound like so much fun, I think we should just make a week of it and explore them alldancing

A week to explore the city!! That sounds nice. Maybe mom will take that week off and we could do the dog park tour. It might be kind of fun to do a little coastal camping...I'll have to look into that!

Crissie Fields is not a good idea - dogs have to be on leash, it is crowded and a hight tourist traffic area.. There are no picnic tables that would be convenient in any shape or form. People don't like to share the beach with dogs.. We have been messing with this area for 10 years now and only go when we have guests or at night.

SF Golden Gate is great - the Sharon Meadows is lovely and perfect du to its location within the park - central, playground, bathrooms, carousel, music, whatever you like. Only minus is, there aren't any picnic areas not bbq options. Also we'd have to make a reservation way ahead and maybe even rent it.

Other than that the GGP offers nice meadows and I can get some info in about the best one and how the reservation process goes. The Golden Gate Park is very nice about off leash dogs on unpaved trails and meadows, as long as they are no disturbance to others. Also the police comes by once in a while on their horses. The mein issue here - make sure your dogs don't go for them! Otherwise no problems.

There are great regional parks in the east bay - if there is interest..?

The beach, Fort Funston is great but again here, no picnic area and totally dog crowded. It is pretty much an oversized unofficial, official dog park. They had beach "closures" for snowy plowers (birds), since they thought the dog would disturb them. Turns out, the birds traveled with the dog to the Fort Funston, since the real predators are the gulls. With the dogs around there aren't any gulls and therefor the plowers are happy laugh out loud Funny.
There are bbq pits at the ocean beach itself, near the cliffhouse. We'd have to find out if we'd have to make reservations. This is an awesome area during the week and dogs are welcome off leash.

I will think of some more and am happy to check things out in the area..
Love, sonja
