Hi - this isn't so much about the meds but more on the travel issue - I, too, have become worried about leaving Ziggy - we don't go out of town much, but in September we will be in Chicago for a couple of days. We have left Ziggy a few other times since we got her almost 3 years ago, at a daycare/play boarding place. She doesn't do very well at these places - they're big and she gets scared and anxious when we leave her somewhere other than home. We adopted a second dog in November and had hoped boarding them together would help, but I'm still really worried that Ziggy could have a seizure there when we're out of town.

The other option would be to have someone come to our home and take care of her and Lexi (our other dog) a few times a day while we're gone. That would probably make things more comfortable for her...we just have to figure out who could do it.

On the meds: Our vet has said the same thing - she said there are risks as far as the effects of pheno. on organs (liver, etc.), especially over a long period, so they prefer to keep them off the meds unless they are "frequent" - I believe she said more than once a month. So far Ziggy hasn't had them more frequently than that (her two grand mals were exactly one month apart this spring). So we're just keeping the diary and hoping we can find triggers to minimize exposure to. It's really hard, though...frown

Hi everyone!

We just got back from our trip. We were gone for one week, and it was really the longest Lucca had to go without a loved one near. We actually ended up boarding him at the Vet hospital. We paid extra to keep him in what they call "medical boarding". It really helped us, because it meant that there was always a vet or vet tech in the area with him 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week. It was $48 a day, but for the peace of mind it gave us, it was worth it. They loved him and he was fine the whole time, no seizures. We will definitely use them again if we go somewhere that we can't take him. We really needed a vacation after the last few months and it was easier on us knowing that he was safe. Lucca has been seizure free for about a month. There is still no rhyme or reason to them, and after discussing it with the other vets that we boarded him with, it's definitely better to not have him medicated right now. We can only hope and pray that he stays free of seizures and if he does have them, that we are there with him to help!

Yay, Lucca!! So was this a place where he could run free with other dogs during the day? Or did he get walks/time outside? I'm wondering if there's a similar place here in the Minneapolis area. We've brought Ziggy to a doggy daycare/boarding place before, where she gets to roam with other dogs during the day. But the place did NOT have someone on site overnight, which I never liked. There is one now open near us that DOES have people there 24/7, but it's pretty big and I know Ziggy still would be freaked out!
