Hey everyone! I was just wondering when or if any of you are on medication to control your seizures. Lucca had his first (and second) seizure in December, another one a week later, then another one in January. He didn't have another one until March, but has now had one per week since. He does have hypothyroid and takes meds for that. Our vet told us that you want to wait until they are more frequent before starting meds, but what is more frequent? I keep a record of his seizures, and there is nothing similar that could be a trigger. He is a lab mix 6 1/2 years old. I 've been told that he may need to have an MRI done. I am so worried about him! I want to make sure that I am doing everything I can for him. Any advice????

hi lucca,
i'm sooo sorry to hear that the thyroid meds is not controlling the seizures. we were told by the neurologist that the more that seizures occur more brain damage will occur & then the seizures are likely to get more frequent & serious. we have had hudson on phenobarb since dec & we think he might have had one seizure when we weren't home other then that we have seen no other signs of possible seizures. please ask for a second opinion...& look into getting a mri...it's expensive but defiantely worth the peace of mind. good luck & please keep us posted.
your pal,
hudson

Thanks Hudson! I am so glad to hear that you are doing ok! I am definitely going to look at taking Lucca to a specialist. I read on the epi guardian angels website that the more seizures he has, the more he "learns " to have them. That is what is so scary. Thanks for all of your advice. I will keep you posted!

I was started on meds right away, I became epi with a bang,
2 in less then 3 hours, grand mauls.
had 4 more after the vet gave me the meds
I go months without haveing any, and then have several in just a few days
I would think your vet wouldnt want to start meds unless he had too, so trust him.

hope you never have too they are not fun

Thanks Dylan. Our vet thinks that it is better to wait to start the meds. The seizures are so sporadic, they just don't think he needs them yet. The first two he had were really bad, also within three hours. Since then, he's had 4 or 5 minor ones (that's from Dec - present). I do trust our vet, I just want to make sure that we are doing everything we can to keep him healthy!

would your vet be willing to give you valium to keep "on hand" incase he has a cluster ?

that way you could start the stopping process till you can get ahold of him?

I am defintiely going to ask him for that. I am nervous because we are going on vacation at the end of May. Unfortunately, we are going to the Caribbean, so Lucca can't come with us. We have reservations for him to stay at a really nice animal hospital. There are vets and vet techs available 24/7. However, it doesn't make it any easier for me. What do any of you do with your epi pups when travelling?

we too are not travelers. if we do go out all day without the boys my parents live a few streets up so my mom comes to let them out, feeds them... my hubby always bugs me that we need to go on a vacation but i don't think it's fair to ask my mom to look after 3 dogs & a cat. so if we do go anywhere it's just for the day & we try & take the boys where ever we can. i agree with dylan...if you have to leave lucca somewhere atleast you know his healthy will be well looked after at a vet clinic. do you have anyone that can come & stay at your home with him or maybe visit him at the vets??

It has been quite some time since I have been on dogster, but tonight I was tired of chasing my tail and remembered this wonderful board.
I have had petit seizures for almost 2 years and did not take meds, as I only had one a month and even skipped several months in between. Odd thing is 4 months ago I became aggressive. Scary aggressive. One time I jump up at mommy's face 4 times in a row while growling and snapping at her. After the 4th jump and everyone yelling at me, I stopped and looked at her like nothing happened.
The doctor said this could be a type of seizure. Mommy started me on Pheno and it has been 4 months, no seizures and the aggression went away. Mommy was sad to start me on meds and if it wasn't for the aggression, she most likely would not of started.
Best wishes!

Hi Dylan! I have missed you!
