I have a stray cat that lives outside. his name is bear. my husband and Took him into the vet yesturday because he didn't look so good.

they told us he has FeLV and they couldn't do anything. I did wan't to put him down because he has been living a good life outside until recently.

they said a Specialist could help us. But they never gave me the number to one. I know there are medications that can help bear, can anyone tell me the cost of all this and how long can he live with this?

right now we are treating him for a ear infection, ear mites, URI, eye infection flees and skin infection.

I just don't want to put him to sleep. I know in my heart he can live a healthy life.

It really depends on what kind of treatment he needs. I see a holistic vet - my office visit was about the same as a regular vet, and I am on Vetri-DMG to boost my immune system ($13 and it lasts two months) and a homeopathic antiviral (around $25 and it has lasted almost 3 months). But I don't have any symptoms. If Bear has symptoms, he'll need different medications and he may have to go to the vet more often.

If you want a specialist in traditional vet medicine, I am not sure what kind of specialist you'd see. shrug

Is there any way you can bring Bear inside to prevent the spread of FeLV to other kitties?

And WELCOME to the group! smile

bear is showing signs of it. Bear doesn't need to go to a Specialist to be treated for his feLV? the vet I took him too wanted me to put him down and was really of no help. I had to tell him I want treatment and he said he couldn't do anything, so Now I'm stuck trying to do this and I don't know where to start. I don't want him to go. My husband and I are talking about putting him down to sleep, but it's hard to even think that because he's such a good kitty and he enjoys his life. (i'm getting teary eyed just thinking about it), I don't know if bear will even get better because he is sick but I have to try, I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I didn't try.

the entire apartment complex is full of strays and they are already infected with feLV. I can tell by some of them. A lot of them end up on my porch.

Bear is sleeping in my shed in a big cage. we let him out of it when we clean it everyday and he walks around on the porch with us and when were done cleaning he goes back in on his own. I have two cats myself who aren't feLV postive, but milo may be showing signs of it. even before I knew bear had this I have did everything to prevent milo from being within any contact with bear and his scent. Milo was tested for feLV in July or Aug. he was NEG. I had them test him because he kept sneezing and it wasn't an URI and we've came to the conclusion he has allergies. But i'm going to get him test again for it just incase the test missed it.

I just really want to get bear treatment for this virus. I want him to live out the restof his life.

he is loosing junks of hair. I think it's from the stress. hes on Clavamox for an ear infection, and eye infection, and he also needs cream applied to his eyes twice a day. They say he had a bad ear infection from ear mites and they just gave me ear mite killer, I'm afraid he's going to need more.

I really think the vet just gave me a band aid to fix his eye and ear infection and they let me bring him home to die.

I just wish I had more money so i could get this done asap. hes only a stray but he means a lot to me, and I wish I could keep him but more than anything I just wish someone could take him in and care for him who knows how and isn't afraid.

it's going to be so hard to see bear gone and I feel like it's my fault. I could have taken him to the vet sooner but I didn't.

I don't think I'll ever care for another stray because of this. I don't want to get so attached again. its to hard.

Tommy's mom here ...

You need to find a vet that will help you, rather than suggesting you put Bear to sleep. Our regular vet even told me that Tommy's diagnosis in itself was not a reason to put him to sleep.

I would like to suggest that you consider taking him to a holistic vet. You can do a search HERE to find a list of holistic vets in your area. Contact them and ask them what they can offer for a FeLV+ kitty. That's what I did, and I found a vet that I love. Feel free to share their responses with me. I've already been through all of this. smile

You should also feed him the best quality food you can afford, preferably with no grains. I know finances are tough right now, and honestly, that has been the most limiting factor for me as well. I hope you can find a treatment plan that you can afford and will benefit Bear.

There are also traditional vet medicines such as interferon that are used in treatment for FeLV. Also, there is a new medication called Imulan LTCI that sounds promising, but it is very expensive.

I also encourage you to join the e-mail group that I have listed on the main group page. They, along with the wonderful friends I have met on Catster, saved my sanity when Tommy was diagnosed. Please don't panic, but go ahead and cry. Remember, I've been through it so I know it's so hard! Then wipe away your tears and start researching to find a solution that suits both you and Bear. hug

Feel free to lean on me at any time!

Thank you soooo Very much!!!!!!!! I called them up and she told me, We can help bear!!! they are going to look him over and I told her he looks like he's going to die but he's being strong and if he needs to be put down I will have to do that for his health.. I hope he doesn't need to be put down. Im so happy she was thinking of the cat and not the money

That's wonderful! applause I'm so glad I could help. Please keep me posted!

On another note, let me just say that IF Bear's quality of life has declined too much, no one would think badly of you for helping him to the Rainbow Bridge. hug But if they think they can help him, go for it!!

I took Bear to the the vet, we just got back.

they put him on medication!!!!

wei Qi Booster
Transfer factor
interferon
Vetropolycin

I asked her about that other one you listed that is new. She said she never herd of it, but I did have it written on a paper with the site and she said when she gets home she's going to look into it. I hope to get bear on that and I told her it looks promising.

they were disguest at how banfield treated bear! they couldn't believe how they treated him as well as my husbad and I.

they said bear has a chance because he still eats really good, walks around and wants love and isn't int he dumps like he's ready to go.

thank you so very much for listing that link. that is the best vet I've gone to!!! they the vet assitant gave me advantage for free because not many poeple would do what we did with bear, and she also said, bear is lucky he picked you guys. They told me if you get offended with anything im doing just tell me. and they actually took the time with bear and didnt brush him of.

this was the best vet. I LOVE THEM and i want to take my own pets there now. I think I may.

thank you

That's wonderful!!! applause applause applause I am so happy you had such a positive experience! Having a good vet is so important. I do love our regular vet, because even though they didn't have anything to offer Tommy in terms of treatment, they still treated him and I with respect. I took him there to be neutered on January 29th and he did VERY well. They used a laser to do the surgery, per my request. But I will likely use Tommy's holistic vet as his primary vet, since she is the one that is treating him.

I have my own opinions about BANFIELD which I will save for a later time. silenced (My other cat, Tucker, was TERRIFIED of going there. And they had the nerve to call him aggressive.)

But that's not the issue at hand here. silenced

It sounds like Bear is on appropriate medications, and I really hope they help him get over or at least lessen his symptoms! Tommy isn't on the LTCI either, because it is really for cats that are showing signs of FeLV, which Tommy is not.

Keep me posted!!! happy dance

I should add that I've heard great reports about Transfer Factor, but I haven't tried it on Tommy. His current regimen is working so well. But I'm interested in hearing how it works for Bear!

the vet didnt know how much it would cost for her to order either but she said she was going to order it on Tues or Monday.
