My VET Visit

November 12th 2008 12:46 pm

It wasn't at all what I expected. I didn't get any shots. Instead, they took blood from me to see if I have FeLV or FIV. The VET did a "snap" test which showed that I have been exposed to the FeLV virus. The FIV test was negative.

Mommy isn't giving up on me! She loves me too much for that! There's always a pawsibility of it being a false positive. They also took some more of my blood to send it to a lab to see if the virus has actually attacked my blood cells. It's pawsible that I've just been exposed to it, but it isn't making me sick.

I don't FEEL sick!! Maybe a little sore where they took my blood, but not sick!

Purrs are welcomed. OH!! And they saw some fleas on me! So all of us got flea medicine!

I will let everykitty know as soon as I hear what my test results show.

Love,
Tommy

I Have FeLV ...

November 16th 2008 9:24 pm

... but I'm okay!

My second FeLV test came back positive. So the vet called Mommy on Friday and told me that she should either keep me separated from Tucker and Tessie, or that they could help me go to the bridge. I don't know where or what the bridge is, but Mommy said I'm not going there! I'm just a kitten, and I am soooooooooo happy here!

Mommy tried to keep me separated from my brother and sister. She really did! But I just cried and cried. And she thought about it a LOT! What kind of life would a kitten like me have locked up in a room all by myself? Tucker and even Tessie were looking for me! They KNEW I was in that room and wanted me to come out! Also, they both were vaccinated against this nasty bug. It was originally done by their OLD (evil) vet without Mommy's permission, but now Mommy is glad it was done. And they had already been exposed to me for 2 weeks.

Mommy thought long and hard about it, and made the decision to let me live with Tucker and Tessie. She did make a few adjustments, and it seems like she keeps adding to the adjustments:

1. I eat my wet food in a separate room. This is partially because I am getting diarrhea medicine in my food twice a day. When I come back out, if they haven't eaten all of theirs, Mommy puts their food up where she thinks I can't see it.

2. Mommy (who is a nurse) takes her work shoes off before she comes in the apartment so none of us can pick up any bugs from them. She has to change her clothes and wash her hands before she can touch us.

3. We are trying out Innova EVO and Wellness CORE dry and canned foods. Mommy wants us to be on a good, grain-free food.

4. She changes our water lots of times per day.

5. She scoops our litterboxes lots and lots of times per day.

I am sure there will be more adjustments. Mommy is also looking into a holistic vet for me, to keep my immune system boosted.

So that's it! I wish it was better news, but at least I have a chance! I feel fine so far!!

Love,
Tommy

Another VET?

November 18th 2008 6:29 am

Mommy is getting ready to take me to another vet today. But this is a HOLISTIC vet! I don't know what that means, but Mommy says she wants to help me! Not keep me away from Tucker and Tessie, not send me to the bridge, but help me. I think I like that!

Maybe she can even help me not be a cootie anymore!

Love,
Tommy

I am a Cootie NO MORE!!!

November 19th 2008 6:02 pm

Mommy took me to my holistic vet yesterday. Her name is Dr. Nan. I liked her a lot! She wasn't like the other vet. For one thing, she was a lady ... like my Mommy is. And she kissed my head and my cute little tummy! But most of all, she didn't tell Mommy that I have to go to the bridge! I'm still trying to figure that out out. Mommy drove over some bridges on the way to the vet - is one of those the bridge they are talking about??

Anyway, Dr. Nan said that the food Mommy chose fur me (Solid Gold Indigo Moon Holistic Cat Food) was a great choice fur ALL of us. It has lots of protein (46%), which I guess is supposed to make me big and strong! Maybe I'll even be strong enough to stomp on this silly FeLV someday!

She also gave Mommy two holistic medicines fur me. One was DMG (Dimethylglycine), which is supposed to help my immune system. I didn't even know I had an immune system! All I know is that I have orange fur, and paws, and a tail, and ears, and a nose, and eyes, and a mouth! Oh, and a tummy! But I guess the immune system doesn't work as well as it should when you have the FeLV bug in you, and that I can get sick easily, so the DMG will help keep me healthy.

The second medicine is a homeopathic mixture of antiviral medicines. In other words, it's BUG KILLER!!! I call it Cootie-B-Gone! Mommy has to drop that one right in my tiny mouth because as Dr. Nan told Mommy, homeopathic medicines work when they're absorbed in the mouth instead of being swallowed.

So that's it fur now, my furriends! I hope to have even better news soon!

Love,
Tommy

I was a stray...my pawrents kept me separate from Smokey until they got the results from my vet. I was FeLV positive...and this is the test that is 99.8% reliable. I overhead the vet saying something like "I would understand if you want to put him down" and I remember my mawmy taking me straight home. She then immediately went on line, joined a Yahoo group, and got some REAL answers! They put me on Yu Ping Feng San, to boost my immune system, and put me on GOOD food, and stress free. I stayed in the spare room for some months, while my pawrents tried to find an only cat home for me. My Daddy suggested that they retest me...and to the vet clinic's GREAT surprise, I no longer have FeLV! I spend time with my gramma's cats, but not my sister, cause, well, I don't get along with her. I am happy, healthy and am still taking my medicine every day. That is my story...with a happy ending!

Our post if from all three of us who are living with FeLV. I'm Bo, and I'm the oldest, so I'm writing but I'll tell you all about my sisters Seven and Darcy.

Meowmy and PurrDaddy got me from Meowmy's cousin. My kitty-mommy showed up on her porch, pregnant with what turned out to be five kittens. Meowmy took two - my and my brofur Cider. Shortly after we came to our furever home, Meowmy took us to the vet and got the news that we were FeLV positive. (I still doesn't know what that means, but Meowmy sez I'm fine!). My brofur Cider only lived about a year before cancer struck him - fast and furious. They let him go to the Bridge after taking him to vets and the state vet school in Athens, GA. Meowmy still gets so upset about Cider that she's been unable to make a Catster page for him. We love him still!

I'm almost four now and healthy as a horse! Meowmy feeds me high protein foods and gives me interferon and L-lysine to boost my immune system. (My sisfurs get these, too.) She tries to keep our lives as stress free as she can.

Seven joined our family next. One night, PurrDaddy went to the grocery store. He was in the dairy section, next to an emergency exit fire door, when he was sure he heard the crying of a kitten. Being the soft-hearted man he is, he asked the check-out crew if they knew of any cats around. Teenagers being teenagers, they weren't very interested, but shortly afterward, he saw two boys headed to the rear delivery docks, one carrying a broom. My PurrDaddy drove around back, not wanting to leave a defenseless cat or kitten to face the broom-armed boys alone. Beneath a pallet, they found a small kitten, no more than 4-5 weeks old. Naturally, the kitty came to a forever home with us! She was diagnosed as FeLV+ on her first vet trip. Her meow is just a chirp. We think she used up her voice crying for help! She's a wonderful sisfur!

Darcy is our newest FeLV+ sisfur. Darcy was found at Meowmy's workplace. After checking the neighborhood, it became apparent she'd been abandoned. Just a tiny kitten, she couldn't have been over six weeks old. As the designated cat-rescue-person at work, Meowmy naturally took her home! I love Darcy! She's a cute kitten and a terrific sisfur!!

In addition to us and Catfish and Sheba, who are 'normal', we have Shamrock, a deaf Angora, and our newest family member, Scarlett, who is blind and partially deaf. Meowmy and PurrDaddy have no human kids, so they've taken it as their life's misison to care for the kitties lots of other folks wouldn't want. We get lots and lots of love!

With me, Meowmy tried to separate me from the healthy cats at first, but it just seemed so mean! I wanted to meet them and play! So now we all live together. We get along well and never fight - well, play fighting does go on, but nobody gets scratched. So far, it's worked fine. Of course, the 'well' cats all stay current on their shots. Seven, Darcy, and I get well-cat checks at least three times a year to catch any problems early on. I've had a couple of mouth ulcers but that's all.

Aren't we lucky kitties?

So glad this group is here! Nice to meet you all! Please go visit our pages and sign our guestbooks. We'd all love to be furriends!

Love,
Bo, Seven, and Darcy

Bo and family, I am so glad you made it! hamster dance Mommy loved hearing from you a while back, and how you all live together with the "normal" kitties, because it helped her feel like she wasn't being a horrible person by putting me with Tucker and Tessie. She doesn't freak out anymore when I wrestle with Tucker! laugh out loud

Mom is just keeping us all as healthy as possible. And yes, she will keep Tucker and Tessie current on their FeLV vaccine. She knows there is a risk for VAS with the FeLV vaccine, but in this case, she is willing to take that risk.

Mommy did feel like a meanie for trying to keep me separated. I just cried and cried! My holistic vet, Dr. Nan, agreed that it would just stress me out and possibly make me sick. So here I am! And I don't feel sick at all! happy dance happy dance happy dance
