The Law of the Garbage Truck

One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean he was really friendly.
So I asked, 'Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!'
This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck.'
He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it. And sometimes they'll dump it on you. Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.
The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day.
Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets.
So love the people who treat you right.
Pray for the ones who don't.
A fact that will never change:
Life is ten-percent what you make it and ninety-percent how you take it!

The Toxic Mind

Today's Scripture
“Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs of life” (Proverbs 4:23 AMP).

Today's Word
When something is toxic, it’s poisonous; it can destroy you. When we go around dwelling on the wrong thoughts, thinking about what we can’t do or how we’ll never see our prayers answered, those thoughts are toxic thoughts. Toxic thoughts left alone become like toxic waste that sinks into your heart. It will eventually contaminate your whole life. It affects your self-image. It affects your attitude, your level of confidence, and ultimately, your success at everything you do. That’s why the scripture says to guard your heart because the condition of your heart and mind determine the condition of your whole life.

Make the decision today to detox any negative, self-defeating thoughts by meditating on God’s promises instead. Make the decision to detox impatience, detox low self-esteem, detox negative words that you may have spoken. Make the decision to dwell on what God says. God says, “You are forgiven.”
God says, “Your best days are in front of you.” God says, “I know the number of hairs on your head.”
God says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” As you detox your mind and fill your thoughts with His promises, you’ll see His hand at work in your life. You’ll rise above the earthly clamor that wants to rob your joy, and you’ll live the fulfilling life He has planned for you!

A Prayer for Today
Father in heaven, I invite You to purify my heart and mind by the power of Your Holy Spirit today. Wash me with the Word as I meditate on Your wonderful promises. Help me keep my mind focused on You.
In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

The Day Bill Came To Church
===========================

His name is Bill.

He has wild hair, wears a t-shirt with holes in it, jeans, and
no shoes. This was literally his wardrobe for his entire four
years of college.

He is kind of esoteric and very, very bright. He became a
Christian while attending college. Across the street from the
campus is a church. The members of which are well-dressed and
very conservative.

They want to develop a ministry to the students but are not sure
how to go about it. One day Bill decides to visit that church.

He walks in wearing his jeans, t-shirt, wild hair, and no shoes
and starts down the center aisle looking for a place to sit.
The church is completely packed, and he can't find a seat.

The members look a bit uncomfortable, but no one says anything.
Bill gets closer and closer to the pulpit, and when he realizes
that there are no seats left, he just sits down on the carpet.

By now the members are really uptight; tension fills the air.

Then, from the back of the church, a deacon has silver-gray
hair, a three-piece suit, and a pocket watch. He's a godly man,
very elegant, very dignified, very courtly. He walks with a
cane, and as he heads toward Bill all the members are saying to
themselves, you can't blame him for what he is going to do.

How can you expect a man of his age and background to understand
a college kid sitting on the floor? It takes a long time for
the old man to get down the aisle. All eyes are focused on him.
The church is utterly silent. The minister can't even begin
preaching until the deacon does what he has to do.

When he reaches the front, the congregation watches as he, with
great difficulty, lowers himself and sits down next to Bill so
he won't be alone.

When the mister gains control of himself, he says,
"what I am about to preach, you will never remember.

What you have just seen, you will never forget".

The History of Aprons.

I don't think our kids know what an apron is.

The principal use of
Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, but along with that, it
served as a pot holder for removing hot pans from the oven.

It was wonderful for drying
children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken coop, the
Apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs
to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came, those
aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.

And when the weather was
cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped
many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.

Chips and kindling wood
were brought into the kitchen in that apron.

From the garden, it carried
all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the
hulls.

In the fall, the apron was
used to bring in Apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company
drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could
dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready,
Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was
time to come in from the fields to dinner.

It will be a long time
before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time
apron' that served so many purposes.

Send this to those who
would know (and love) the story about Grandma's aprons.

REMEMBER: Grandma used her apron to set her hot baked apple pies on the window
sill to cool. Her Granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw.

They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron. I don't think I ever
caught anything from an apron--except love.

Six The Hard Way
================

I was on my usual run. The mercury hovered above 90 degrees.
It was hot.

Sweat poured into my face stinging my eyes as my feet pounded
the pavement in a steady rhythm. I saw a man standing in a
doorway and then heard a shout,

“That will either kill you or make you strong!”

It was a MountainWings Moment.

Both halves of the statement were true.

Such heat combined with the exertion could surely kill you.
It’s always an elevated risk exercising in extreme temperatures.

I waved and kept moving. Heat kills a few but inactivity kills
a thousand times more. His statement applied to more than just
running in the heat. It applies to all tough situations.

When tough things come, it will either strengthen you or break
you down. It will make you better or bitter. It will make you
an over comer or overwhelm you.

Tough things can kill.
They kill the spirit, hopes, dreams, visions and even desire.
Excessive pressure can make you explode
or make you learn new ways to constructively vent.

Spirit is very much like the physical; you can’t build muscle
without weight or put another way,
“Smooth seas never make good sailors.”

Heat, pressure, weight on your shoulders, and the constant
demands of life can make you strong. They build your faith.

After six miles, I finished my run, exhausted but feeling
better. I went inside, showered, and took a nap.

I ran hard for the six and then rested.

There are keys to improving your odds that the pressure makes
you stronger.

Run hard for the six then rest, is one of those keys.

Cancel the Debt and Be Free

When someone deeply hurts you, quite often it leaves you with a feeling that they owe you something. Most of the time, the people who hurt you don’t realize what they have done. Let me ask you something. Do you really think other people are planning their life around hurting you? The truth is very seldom does someone intentionally set out to hurt another person. Yes, sometimes they do, but that is usually not the case.
Typically people hurt you because they are insensitive, rude or angry. If you allow this to make you so mad that your evenings at home are spent stewing over the situation, then you have allowed yourself to accept the devil’s bait.
While you’re miserable and upset, the person who has hurt you is probably at Shoney’s having a good time and not even thinking about you. They may even be enjoying a piece of strawberry pie with whipped crème on it while you are at home taking Rolaids and trying to keep the pain in your stomach under control. You must understand that letting go of hurts in your life has no bearing on the other person. It’ s something you must do with yourself.
While counseling a married couple, the wife accused her husband saying, "You owe me." Although he had hurt her for fifteen years, it was not within his power to give those years back. When somebody owes you a debt that they cannot pay, the only thing you can do is forgive the debt because it’s not within human power to change the past.
Another woman hated her deceased father who had molested her. She refused to forgive him because she felt that he "owed her" because he had stolen her innocence. I couldn’t help but think, "How much does he owe you? What are you going to do, dig up his grave and pawn the gold ring off his finger?" The reality is, the deceased father could not pay his daughter back. He’s dead and gone. She now has the responsibility to forgive the debt.
Forgiveness means to absolve from payment or cancel a debt. If you have been seriously hurt, you might as well forgive and cancel the debt because ther e’s nothing you can do to change the past. How long do you plan to live with the pain in your heart? Although you can’t change the past, you can change your response to it.
Cancel the debt and be free.

"Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 3:13-14).

The Day I Was Born
==================

I felt like a fabric so torn
And hated the day I was born
Life seemed gruesome and unfair
When I saw all in a sumptuous fair

I thought it was a welcome time
To cruelly cut myself in my prime
But you may ask, “What about God”?
I considered Him indifferent and odd

I questioned His timing and plan
Which didn’t make meaning to a bitter man
In all my pains, I wanted to protest
By doing things He would detest

I wondered why He felt so cool
When I was stuck in a fiery pool
All these and my unbelief I now regret
For He still loosed me from the net

I’m surprised He chose today
To remember and wipe my tears away
And the battered tatters to be undone
A rebirth of a sort, on the day I was born.

Dear MountainWings,
My poem seems to have a heavy dose of melancholy.
Indeed, I had always protested my birth,
for I thought life was devoid of mirth.
Life had a strange intent,
for I was born without my consent.

Everything was in total disrepair, or so it seemed.
I believed Satan’s lie that God had pleasure in my pains.
When I gave up all struggles, something happened.
I got a scholarship. An induction was fixed on August 25th.
The date was not so important since I was simply overjoyed.
But on a closer look, I was struck with a surprise of my
lifetime.

It was a MountainWings moment!!!!

The induction was fixed on my birthday.
A day I had hated, turned to be a day of joy and blessing.
So, I became ashamed of my impatience and was inspired to
compose this poem.

God has remained a mystery to me ever since.

Higher Ways

Today's Scripture
“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:9).

Today's Word
Sometimes it’s pretty easy to get focused on what’s happening in the world around us. We see things on the news or hear something about the economy, and we dwell on those thoughts. Before long, those thoughts can definitely drag us down. But when we choose to think higher thoughts, the way God thinks, and when we choose to meditate on God’s Word, His higher thoughts will draw us to a higher level of living.

You can live above the stress and pressure of the world because He has promised to give us perfect peace when we keep our minds focused on Him. God couldn't be more clear about that. You can live above financial worries because God has promised that when we follow His Word, He will supply all our needs according to His riches in glory. You can live above fear and dread because God has promised t hat His perfect love will drive out all fear. Choose God’s higher thoughts today and allow His ways to become Your ways. Open your heart and allow Him to direct what occupies your mind. As you do, you will rise above the negative clamor that is trying fill you with fear and rob your joy.

A Prayer for Today
Father in heaven, I humbly come to You giving You all that I am. Fill me with Your higher thoughts. Help me to look beyond my circumstances and stay mindful of the good things You have in store for me.
In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
