Sandia is my doll baby and of course one of the most beautiful "kids" of ours. Be sure to look at her NOW photo to see what a beauty she is!
Here are our stories… We first rescued "Lucky Streak" behind the Texas Renaissance Faire grounds when he was about 3 months old. Lucky Streak is a domestic short haired black and white (with a white streak down his nose) cat that is now 5 years old and 20 pounds! At 3 years old (June 2004), he lost his playful, loving friends - our loved brother and sister pair of 9 year old cats during a horrible trip through New Mexico where we totaled our 5th wheel.
We had so much more kitty love to give, so we contacted FAIR (a rescue group). My husband and I went and adopted the two oldest cats they had. We adore our "Bonnie" - She is a stunning symmetrical grey and white Norwegian forest cat who is now 13 years old. We also fell in love with "Olive" aka Olive, I Love Olive. She is our shy black, orange and tan (though darker coloring than Sandia) medium haired cat who is now 10 years old.
I took Bonnie and Olive back to Albuquerque, NM the end of June 05, and spent 6 weeks living there and trapping for our lost ones. I rescued many strays, trapped someone's lost Egyptian cat (they were reunited), and found another person's cat that had broken it's hip by jumping too far (they were quickly reunited), but that is another story!
Cat #50 was Sandia. By the time I was at 50 cats, I decided the next kitten rescued would come home with me. Because of Sandia's unknown health status I kept her apart from Bonnie and Olive, then we all headed home to meet up with my husband who kept Lucky Streak back in Tucson. After having Sandia checked out with the vet, we had to put our little one into a spare bathroom to live with too many medicines, so no-one else (cat wise) got to meet her for a while.
When she was introduced to the other "kids", they had sniffed under the door for about a month, and Lucky Streak took to little Sandy right away! The older girls shunned Sandia (and didn't give Lucky the time of day either), but Sandia was thrilled to have someone to play toys with. I use the 6 month rule of thumb for new animals coming into our home - it takes a minimum of 6 months for everyone to adjust to each other. But after 2 years the wonderful relationships settle down and everyone has their spots, favorite toys and special times for pets.
Sandia was rescued in Albuquerque, NM - hence the name Sandia, for the Sandia Mountains there. As she began to perk up we added a few more nick names - Sweet Sandy, Pumpkin Spice, our little Sandy Baby, and Good Girl. It took more than 5 months to get her going, but our vet was wonderful and we worked together every Monday to see what else we could do for her.
She was allergic to kitten food (Iams), had gastrointestinal problems, ear mites I thought we would never get rid of, and mange - through with a heart full of love and shining eyes, she told me she wanted to LIVE! At her worst "looking", friends saw how sick she looked, wanted to help pay to have her put down. She did look pretty pitiful for a long time, but Sandy was my gift from god! We boiled whole chickens to debone, cut up and mixed with cooked brown rice to feed her. Someone gave me a homeopathic remedy for ear mites that worked within 2 weeks and thanks to the diligence of our vet, a dose of mange medicine, we got Sandy back on the road to heath!
Sandia's little ears finally perked back up at 5 months and we knew she was going to make it. At 7 months old, Sandia was healthy enough to get her first set of kitten shots, spayed and microchipped.
Everyone who meets Sandia wants to know how to make a cat as loving as our Sandia. Rescue a needy cat and what a love you'll have for life!
She gives me whisker kisses when I'm in the bathroom (the one she lived in for a while), and waits for me to wash up to do "Sandy UP". This is where Sandia stands on the sinks countertop and reaches her front paws up to pat my face for me to pick her up. Sandia straddles with her back legs and loves on my head, gives kisses all over my face then snuggles into me. She cries out to me in the house if she can't see me, so I call back to her and let her know I'm near. Sandy also likes to sit next to my computer and has learned to "Sit Pretty" - so I can type on the computer without her walking on my keyboard : -) She’s also learned to bend her head after sitting pretty, to let me kiss her “kissy spot”, and holds up her paw to shake. Quite a fete for a cat that began looking so pitiful!
We leave all our cat carriers out and open in the house so no-one is too afraid of them, but most days during kitty nap time, we'll find Sandia sleeping in one of them happy as can be. The cutest thing to see is when Sandia is happy from petting, or resting in her carrier she sticks part of her tongue out and forgets to put it back in!
I wish people could actually see how sweet of a cat Sandia is and how giving a rescue safety in your home gives you back ten-fold in love.

a-hem, i a not posting to be on the list actually. well, i wouldn't deny the honor, but...
i just wanted to say i love the idea of giving a short bulletin of the group's cotw - just like sandia gave as 'application'. perhaps we can have a thread where the cotw can post answers to a short 'questionaire' of no more than 3-5 questions (i could pmail you suggestions, or we discuss them here - one for sure would take up sandia's idea of telling the rescue/adoption story)? what do you think?
oh, and btw: i'd suggest tarcin, for her wonderful paw-hi5!
I'm a real sweetheart who is very loyal to my mommy. I follow her all over the apartment & I sleep with her every night. I'm always waiting by the front door for mommy to get home. When she opens the front door, my nose is always right in it. I love to be petted too.
I would like to be cat of the week! I am an older cat who still plays like a kitten. I love to cuddle Meowmy and talk to her all the time! Some people think that having only one eye is a problem - but I can catch anything! It would be a really nifty honor.
I would be honored to be "Cat of the Week" here at the Calico & Tortie Darlings group. I'm a cutie pie with a rich purr and love for body massages from Daddy, especially after a hard day of slinking around the house. While I can be grumpy with my kitty siblings (they deserve it!), I am good little motherer with the little humans. They can wear my like a stole and stuff me under the covers at night, and I love them all the more for it.
I would be honored to be COTW sometime! I'm a small (but loooong) tortie who looooves to cuddle and harrass THAT DOG. I am a mommy's girl, but I love to sit with dad when he is on his computer. I have comandeered the guest room as my own, and the basement is my roaming territory. I LOVE people and greet them at the door. And if you give me treats I will love you furever!!!
