 | | | | First a bit about Reiki.
This excerpt is from the book "Animal Reiki' by Elizabeth Fulton and Kathleen Prasad.
The term Reiki is usually translated as "universal life energy." It is a holistic healing system, meaning that it treats the whole being, addressing problems and healing at all levels: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Along with other therapies, such as acupuncture, homeopathy, Qi Gong and flower essence therapy, Reiki is part of the emerging field of energetic healing, rediscovered from the wisdom and knowledge of ancient cultures for use in modern times. Everything in the universe is made up of and connected by energy. By transmitting the healing energy of the universe along energetic pathways and through the practitioner's hands to the client, Reiki heals as deeply as needed within a being to create a shift towards health.
A reiki treatment can be given inperson, with the hands of the practitioner placed on or at a short distance from the client; or, since Reiki is energetic in essence, it can be sent across a distance, across a room or to another geographic location. Reiki can be used to maintain health and energetic balance in a healthy being, to heal illness, injuries, emotional and spiritual problems, and the ease the transition between life and death.
End of excerpt
Reiki is taught to initiates by a Reiki Master who "attunes" the new practitioner to better enable them to channel the energy. The symbols and attunements are based on ancient Tibetan rituals but modern Reiki started in Japan and has moved to the West with several Masters who have come here.
I myself have level two Reiki which means I have also been taught to do distance Reiki. This enables me to work on animals who are traumatized and will not allow a person near or to be touched by anyone. I practice on both humans and animals. I have only been practicing since November 2007 so am still learning and discovering the energy's powerful effects. It is still difficult to explain to some people, hence the excerpt above. My "intellectual brain" seems to get in the way occasionally, but even so, the Reiki works!!
The Reiki process can be very powerful spiritually and emotionally and I have had several clients (human) that have said they experienced very strong emotions during treatment and often have what are called "releases which are physical manifestations of the spiritual changes. Sometimes they cry, sometimes they twitch, most often they sigh a lot. It is quite powerful.
As for the animals I have worked on, one client called me after the session and asked if I switched her dogs! Her slow and lazy Bull Mastiff was tearing around the house with a toy and her hyper young male Dobie was curled up in a ball sleepily watching the Mastiff play. So, for me it is about balance...that the process works to remove the excess Ki in areas it needs to and to add to the areas Ki is needed. This means that sometimes the results are not what we, as humans, expect...but are invariably for the best higher self of the animal or human being treated.
Length of treatment varies, as much as the animals do...some will happily sit there, putting their tired or injured parts directly in your hands for an hour and some will take what they need in 15 minutes and then mosey away to chill out...they decide the when and how much.
I believe the big thing is the energetic contact triggers what is called "the relaxation response" in the client which allows the immune system or whatever is needed to activate and help heal what is suffering. I also feel that for some, human and animal, it is a bonding that many of us miss out on in our everyday lives. | | | | |
