Lex was diagnosed with hip dysplagia today and the vet did not give me alot of information on this. He is not even three years old yet so i am not sure what to do. If anyone has any advice or information that may help please let me know.

WOW - At such a young age too. My Tazz is 14 and he has been blessed with no hip problems so far. But your Lex needs some comfort. Trying to get him to slow down on running and playing may be near to impossible, especially if he has a safe running area. Maybe you could consider walking him, more than leaving him to his own pace. Keeping his weight down helps also.

Hate to say it but I would consider a new Vet. You are paying to have your friend cared for properly, and part of the care comes in being told what to do for Lex. Doesn't sound like your Vet is very pet friendly (based on what you said). Yes, you can learn a lot from the Internet, but you want/need specific input as regards Lex, not generalities.

My Tazz does have bouts of limping, usually after an active day of play with his girlfriend (a four year old GSPF). My Vet said this was normal in a 14 year old and to give him HALF a Tylnol Arthritis Pain Formula with his food. It relives the pain so he rests well and is ready to play again tomorrow.

See if another Vet can help Lex. In the meantime, he goes on my Puppy Prayer list.

He is so young to have that condition, but hopefully you have him on a good quality food that has glucosmine in it. You should also supplement his diet with glucosmine/condrotin/msm. My shepherd has severe elbow dysplasia from a growing issue when he was younger. He has been on the supplement since he has been about 6 months old (he is now 6 yrs old) and you would never know he has anything wrong with him. Also, hydrotherapy would benefit him a great deal. Another thing that could help is fish oils and omega 3 supplements. I get all my supplements at Walmart. They work just as good as what is offered at the vet's office, but are cheaper. Good luck.

My long haired, black GSD recently underwent surgery and is doing much better--he's 3 as well. I rescued him one year ago in the fall of this year (last of September to be more specific). He was diagnosed in late April and had surgery on his left hip on May 8th of this year.

I supplement glucosamine (1200 mg/day) and he gets 1 oz wild, raw salmon added to his kibble (broken up into two, 1/2 oz servings for each feeding). He loves it, the vet recommended it and you wouldn't believe the difference it has made with his coat, even though he is already on Wellness 5 blend dry kibble!
