OK, for those of you who want to discuss the last book, this is the place.

IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THE BOOK YET AND DON'T WANT THE EXPERIENCE RUINED, DO NOT READ BEYOND THIS POINT!

Glad you posted that! Mom came here two weeks ago and she was still reading Book 6 and had the ending spoiled! frown But it's OK.

She finished Book 7 last night. She liked it. It wasn't her favorite book of the series, but she liked it.

I really liked it!!!!!! I just finished the book last night. I was very surprised that Tonks, Lupin, and Fred died. I really thought that Hagrid and Mr. Weasley were the ones slated for death... I love the final battle between Harry and Voldy. The fact that Harry survived the killing curse a 2nd time to come back and explain things to Voldemort and then finish him off was GREAT. I really thought Petunia would play a larger part in this last book, but apparently not. I think that saddest part of the entire book was Snape's death. I never liked Snape and I was completely convinced he was a true Voldy supporter, but after Harry saw Snape's memory I felt really bad. I never imagined that Snape and Lilly were best friends and that he loved Lily so much that his patronus was the same as hers all of his life. No wonder Snape hated James so much.

What do you all think??

I'm with you. Keep in mind that this IS a childrens series and that having Harry die would not present a very good story line for kids. I have stuck by that theory for years, which is why i was convinced that Jo would not kill off Harry. I will say tho, that I did have quite the scare when Harry confronted Voldy. I didn't realize at that time that Harry was a horcrux and would live. I really loved the happy, tidy ending. It gave me a sense of closure. I loved the fact that Jo left a lot of open end for us toponder so that we have lots of stuff to discuss.

I like the way that they arranged everything with Snape and giving the memories to Harry...considering how he felt about him all those years, it just carried with the theme that love is greater than hate. It was like the best of both worlds to have Harry "die" and then live, too. I cried when Dobby died. All of the deaths were very sudden...they just kind of snuck up on you and if you read too fast, you missed it, which just added to the shock value. I still think that the epilogue should have been expanded or not included. I wish she would do an "alumni directory" or something set 19 years later so we know what all the characters ended up doing, and the professors in their retirement.

The stuff about Dumbledore really surprised me, too. I was thinking more info was coming about Lily's family and possibly James', but not his. I thought the first part was slow, but then it got much quicker (like a roller coaster ride, actually) when they finally stopped traipsing around the forest. I LOVE Neville! And...Gran's on the run!

Oooh, an encyclopedia would be cool! We want to know what happened to Luna!

We were very very sad when Hedwig died. That just seemed so absolutely needless. I mean, yes, she would have been a giveaway to Harry's hidden position, but he could have left her int he care of the Weasleys or something. Although the uselessness of her death is kind of the point, we suppose.

The house-elf riot was CLASSIC!! Fabulous! We laughed out loud at the mental image of little big-eared critters waving carving knives and stabbing legs...wonder if Winky was among them?

OH, how we love Neville! He blossomed into such an amazing character! Mommy was worried that he would be killed in Book 7. He matures so much without Harry at Hogwarts to follow. He becomes a leader when it was desparately needed, as we all suspected he could! He is as much of an illustration of Dumbledore's theory of good leaders ("The best leaders are those who do not seek power..."). In Harry, Ron, and Hermione's absence, it is Neville, Ginny, and Luna, the three least likely, who lead on the rebellion. AND is it Neville who bravely runs at Voldemort when no one else can, INCLUDING Ron and Hermione. And it is Neville who pulls the Gryffindor sword from the Hat...again!

(Did we mention we love Neville?)
