How old are you or are you ATB (at the bridge)?
Approx. 2 years old.

How old were you when you were diagnosed?
They believe I was born with it.

Do you have any symtoms of the disease?
I have a very naughty digestive system and need to eat prescription foods. I have been sick a few times, but nothing too serious, I remain in pretty stable health.

How long after you were diagnosed did you begin to develop symptoms and what kind of symptoms did you develop?
Unsure.

What advice did your vet give you about the disease?
Only received advice from the person adopting me out!

Any advice for newly diagnosed kitties?
Don't let anyone think you're just a sick cat. A lot of cats remain healthy for years. A friend of mine has had FeLV for 10 years!

Did your vet tell you the vaccine for FeLv was "optional"? N/A

Butter "Gone but not forgotten

She is 13 and we just got the results yesterday. Her original vet is a friend and Butter was tested and vaccinated. At 2 she was diagnosed with a heart murmur that is now full fledged heart disease and she was also diagnosed hyperthyroid in the last few days. Apparently quite bad, a 15 which our doc says is extremely high. Butter is what she is and has lived longer than any vet ever thought she would. We won't treat her thyroid disease as most of the treatments would probably kill her. So we will continue to love her and do the best we can for her. And, honestly, she has recovered from the sneeze that brought the new vet to our house and is running, gaining weight again and is back to her self.

We live on a deadend street and have a double lot with a half dozen trees and fruit trees, large garden. So in this setting we let our cats go outside, now I wish we hadn't and of course they won't go outside now. Butter has been a self imposed indoor cat. I think she knew she couldn't defend herself and hasn't gone past laying in the sun on the porch for quite some time.

For the rest of the story see Boo and Shadow's post.

Boo Marley

Boo is 4 and as with his housemate Butter was diagnosed yesterday. When the vet came to see why everyone was sneezing, during Boo's exam found that he had a fever of almost 106. When she first came in to the house she thought it was going to be nothing more than a URI, but Boo's fever made her very suspicious that something more was going on. Although she tried to not scare us immediately. But requested that no one enjoy the yard anymore, which we did.

This has been all the harder because our two cats had been tested and vaccinated. I now realize Boo may have not been. Our new vet is wonderful and reassured us that they can live good and possibly long lives still. She had one FeLv kitty that lived to be 19.

Now that the sneezing is gone they appear completely healthy and happy. I searched the internet for as much material on FeLv that I could and some reassured me, some scared the bajeebers out of me.

Boo is a cat that we inherited from my daughter. I haven't told her yet, not a conversation I am looking forward too, but I will reassure her that Boo can live a happy life still.

Last but not least is Shadow. He is only 1-1/2 . He snapped back from the sneezing so fast and didn't have a fever at all. He may test negative, we will know soon. He was tested and vaccinated for FeLv not that long ago. Boo is his very best friend. Butter is his best adversary.

To hear any of these cats are positive was upsetting, but Shadow was especially hard since he is so young and may be negative. We will do whatever the vet suggests to try to keep him that way. I do know that we will keep everybody and just do our best as we always have.

Pangur is a stray that I took in last November. I noticed he had very loose BMs, sore gums, and lately he had a bit of nasal congestion. I was unprepared for the test results though, he has BOTH FeLV and FIV. However, since starting him on an antibiotic, all of his current problems (diarrhea, sore gums, runny nose) are getting resolved and he is in wonderful shape. I guess he had been in a bit of pain because there has been a visible change in his mood. Now all he wants to do is play!

So for now, all is good. smile
