Chapter One
Blade padded quietly through the hallway of Tabby Hall. He was on a mission and did not want anyone, especially a certain cat named Nemo, to spoil his plans. He reached up and pushed open the heavy oak doors that led to the main entrance. Once inside the main entranceway he turned and closed the doors to seal off any light or noise he might create as he set his plan in motion.
Tabby Hall had been anything but quiet the night before when the annual “We are Terrific Tabbies” costume party had been in full swing. The night sizzled with excitement right from the start. Simba had been able to fly in and had brought a new tabby friend named Hector. Hector came to the party as Zorro and had given a very exciting demonstration of his sword skills even carving an impressive T in the middle of a large wheel of cheese. Dressed as Alex from a Clockwork Orange Blade had cute a dashing figure himself in his white painters jumpsuit and black bowler hat. Under his right eye he had made sure to include the wild fake eyelash that the character wore in the movie. Nemo, Blades arch nemesis, had come as Batman and had spent the night trying to bring Blade to “justice” as he called it. Actually Nemo had spent much of the night grabbing Blade and trying to give him “justice noogies”. As with everything between he and Nemo it was all in good fun. The rest of the tabbies got into the spirit showing off their costumes, flirting, drinking catnip punch, dancing and eating as much food as they could possible stuff in their mouths. After that it was just a matter of time before one by one the kitties dragged themselves off to a well deserved session of sleep.
Blade flicked on the overhead lights and stared at his prey. It was a large, blank prey. A blank, white wall to be exact. The famous Tabby Hall mural was a continuos work in progress on the blank walls of the Tabby Hall entranceway. Each tabby added to it as the fancy took them. Everywhere you looked there were beautiful painted renditions of tabbies dancing, tabbies singing, tabbies sleeping. It was here that Blade planned to put his plan into action. Popping open a can of grey paint Blade dipped his paw in the grey ooze and began his work.

Chapter Two
Simba ran quickly down the backstairs. He had to find someone. He had to find help. Flicking on lights as he went at first he found only the sad remains of the previous nights festivities. Crumpled napkins and plastic cups danced in the small breeze of the hallway as he went by in a rush. Passing the Koi pond he barely noticed the bright pink snorkel mask floating next to a few neon orange earplugs. He heard a low purr and noticed a flicker of movement on the couch in Too Soo’s corner. He went over and turned on the table lamp. Solo blinked up at him.
“Sorry to wake you Solo,” he said in a hurry.
“What time is it?” Solo answered groggily
“Late. Early. I’m not sure. Look it doesn’t matter. All that matters is that I need help.”
“What’s all the noise?,” Colby murmured from the other end of the couch.
“I need help,” Simba repeated in a pleading, anxious voice.
“What’s that?” this time the voice seemed to come from above. Actually it was Nemo who had fallen asleep on the top of the back of the couch.
He climbed down stretching and yawning as he did so.
“What’s up Simba?” he asked
“I don’t know what to do.”
“About what?” Colby asked as he walked across the couch and sat down next to Solo and Nemo.

“Hector. I don’t know what to do about him.”
“Why do you have to do anything about him?” Solo asked confused.
“Yes, what does Hector have to do with you? This is all very confusing.” Nemo said starting to sound a little annoyed.
“You don’t understand.” said Simba practically in tears. “He’s missing”

“Missing? What do you mean missing?” said Nemo
“I mean he was in my room sleeping and when I woke up he was gone.”
“Maybe he just went for a snack,” suggested Colby.
“Snack? Are we having snacks?”a voice chimed in from across the room. It was Stoney who had wanted to sleep on the cool bricks by the Koi pond. The talking of the tabbies had awakened her and now she was hungry. If snacks were going to be served she wanted to make sure she got in line.
“So are we having snacks?” she asked again jumping up on the couch with the others. She noticed that Simba seemed worried.
“It’s okay Simba,” she said reassuringly. “I’m sure there are plenty of snacks for everyone.”
“No, no Stoney. He is worried about Hector.”
“Oh is Hector having snacks as well?”
“Would you forget the snacks!” said Nemo “Simba’s friend Hector is missing. I mean...we think he is missing. Or maybe he went for a walk...or to get snacks....or...snacks do sound good...I wonder how much of the cheese wheel is left?”
“He did not go for a walk,” Simba said loudly. “I found this.”
The tabbies all leaned forward to see what was in Simba’s paw It appeared to be a crumpled up piece of paper.
“He left you crinkle ball to play with?” asked Solo helpfully.
“No it’s a note,” said Simba smoothing out the paper until the words could at last be read.
Don’t do anything silly...We have your friend....the Cat Burgler.
The tabbies all stared down at the note unsure of what to do next.

The first thing that was decided to do was wake up Oliver. After all, even though Oliver was not the oldest of the Tabbies he was still the one all the Tabbies looked to for guidance. Surely he would know what to do. As the group made it’s way to his room they were surprised to find him already awake and walking the halls himself.
“Oliver what are you doing up?” asked Nemo.
“I was going to go for a snack when I saw that the light to the entranceway is on. I was just going to go see who was up at this hour of the night. Why are you all up?”
“Simba’s friend went for a walk to get snacks but then left a note,” said Solo proudly.
“Ummm I don’t think that’s right,” said Stoney helpfully. “I think he forgot to get a snack so he left a note about it.”
“No, No No” corrected Colby calmly. “The note was left because the snacks were missing”
“Really, you guys have just got to start paying attention better,” scolded Nemo lucking his tongue and sadly shaking his head.
Simba walked up to Oliver and spoke in a low voice, “My friend Hector. I fear he is missing and something bad has happened to him.”
He showed Oliver the note. Oliver studied it carefully.
“Hmmm, well we the first thing we should do is search Tabby Hall top to bottom. And the first place we should search is the front hall.”
The tabbies all waited as Oliver pushed open the heavy oak door and then they filed in behind him. There, curled up on a drop cloth on the marble floor was Blade covered in what appeared to be glistening blood.”
“Blade,” shouted Oliver.
Blade jumped up in shock. His shock continued as he panned the group and took in all his visitors.
“What? Is this a raid?” he asked still shocked.
“Look! He has blood on him! He’s the killer. After him! After him!” Nemo shouted and danced around Blade.
“Blood what are you talking about? Oh, that red stuff? It’s paint silly.”
“Sure..that’s just want Charles Manson said,” shot back Nemo
“You don’t believe me? Take a sniff for yourself.” Blade stuck his paw out allowing Nemo to take a sniff.
“Well?” asked Oliver who had watched the proceedings with detached amusement.
“Stinky,” reported Nemo.
“Oh yeah belly flop boy? Your note exactly a bed of roses yourself.”
“I meant,” Oliver said sighing patiently. “Does it smell like paint?”
“Oh,” said Nemo. “Well in that case, yes. Yes it does smell like paint. Stinky paint”
“Oh yeah?” said Blade “Well take a good whiff. That’s right sniff it up.” He pressed his paw against Nemo’s nose.
“Boys...don’t you think we have more serious issues at hand?”
Everyone followed the voice. Miss Muppett stood in the hallway entrance. No one had heard her come in. Then again no one ever heard her unless she wanted them to. It was part of what made her such an agile huntress.
“Sorry Miss Muppett.” said Blade.
“Torry Niss Nuppett,”
“Blade I think you can remove your paw from Nemo’s nose now.”
“Oh yeah right. Sorry.”
“Perhaps it’s better if we allow Blade to get cleaned up and we all move into the library to see if we can figure out what happened to Simba’s friend.”
The group left the main hall leaving Blade and Nemo behind.
“Sorry about the whole blood thing blade. No hard feelings right?” asked Nemo
“No of course not. Could have happened to anyone.”
Blade finished cleaning up relieved that they were leaving the room.
It would be many weeks later before anyone noticed the small portrait of Nemo ,his cheeks flat and a Koi fish in his mouth and wonder how that had been added to the Tabby Hall mural.

Chapter 4

Meanwhile underground, in the network of cellars which run beneath Tabby Hall, three tabbies, totally unaware of the events unfolding above them, worked by candlelight. Heads bowed in concentration and silence, the only sounds to be heard were the plop, plip, plop of a leaking pipe dripping into a black puddle which had formed on the stone floor of the dank cellar.

The air of tension was almost suffocating as Tigga's latest experiment was nearing it's conclusion. Busbee stood 'statue' still as he observed 'the chemist' at work, writing occasional notes on his clipboard and generally admiring the dedication of Tigga, a cat whose lifes work had been focussed on creating the purest, most mind-bending catnip elyxir ever known to cat-kind.
In the corner sat Tigga's assistant, Sunrise, filing her claws and daydreaming about meeting 'the cat of her dreams'. Suddenly Sunrise was distracted from her claw filing, when out of the corner of her eye she spotted a spider, scurrying into a crevice in the cellar wall. Jumping to her feet suddenly with the intent of swatting the spider, she began to swoon, as a morning spent inhaling the potent brew fumes had taken it's toll on her coordination.
Sunrise toppled onto her side and lay motionless for several seconds. "SK!....SK!...." Busbee dropped his clipboard and dashed over to Sunrise, who was by now drooling heavily and giggling like a kitten. "Are you OK?" asked Busbee as he gently slapped her cheek with his paw, to bring her round. Springing to her feet in an instant, Sunrise appeared perfectly alert again. "Yes Busbee, I'm fine! Why do you look so worried?".
Tigga looked on, slowly nodding. He knew this time he'd cracked it - the ultimate catnip experience, with no nip hangover or after effects of any kind. "Busbee, you can be the first to try it properly..." Tigga hoisted down the huge bubbling flagon of brew from its stand and carefully poured some of the liquor into a thimble sized glass. Just as he handed the glass to Busbee, Jack burst into the cellar. He'd ran the entire length of the undergound corridor to inform the workers of the mystery of Hectors disappearance. Gasping for breath and overcome with thirst, Jack snatched the thimble from Busbees paw and gulped down the murky green contents.
"Uuuurrrrrrrp!" belched Jack. This was the last coherrent noise to come out of Jacks mouth for the next 4 hours. Tigga had underestimated the power or his brew and as Jack giggled, gurgled, drooled and writhed on the cobbles, his mind was taken on a journey through a swirling psychadelic 'rainbow world'. Luminous mice with the wings of peacock butterflies flew around his head, while pastel coloured chicks moonwalked down his spine. It was kitty heaven but for Tigga and his two helpers, this was a living nightmare! Tigga turned away from a sobbing Busbee, as he himself doubted that Jack could ever come back from this 'nip-trip too far'.

Fortunately their worries were unfounded as precisely 4 hours after injesting the thimble of brew, Jack snapped out of his stupor and proceeded to blab out the news he'd originally been in such a hurry to deliver.
The words weren't sinking in with these three tabbies just yet though, as they were engulfed in a huge tide of relief that Jack was OK. Tigga removed his white coat, took of his spectacles and rubbed his watery eyes. "This brew must NEVER see the light of day again! We almost lost Jack to it and I'll be dashed if I'm going to risk destroying the mind of an innocent tabby to this stuff again. In the wrong hands, this brew could be DEADLY. I'm going to take it to Miss Muppets study where it can be locked in the safe, out of harms way".
That is exactly what Tigga did, though for how long the brew would remain there was at this point unknown. As these four tabbies rejoined the group and their search for Hector, they knew Jack had a lucky escape but somebody else may not be so fortunate if that brew ever found it's way out of Miss Muppets safe.

"There," Miss Muppett said closing the wall safe. "Now no one will be able to get at your secret catnip formula." The safe door gave a satifying click as it swallowed up it's contents. "Thank godness," said Tigga flicking his tail slightly. "I would hate for anything to happen if that got in the wrong hands." "Well it's protcted now," Miss Muppett reassured him. "But, if you don't mind Oliver and I need to be alone to go over some of the recent events at the Hall." "Of course, of course." Tigga gave a small bow and went out into the hallway closing the door to Miss Muppett and Oliver behind him.

Out in the hallway Sunkitty was waiting for him.
"I think they bought it," he said smirking at her.
"But how can you be sure?"
"Baby, you just have to trust old Tigga."
Sunkitty paused for a moment snapping her gum and pondering her association with Tigga.
Her gum was a bright pink type. Every day she tried to match her gum choice to her claw polish choice. Today her claws were frosted pink and the snapping gum echoed their colors.
"Well, I don't know. It just seems like such a big risk that's all."
"Look doll. Tigga wants what's best for all Tabbies. trust me."
Sunkitty looked into his big round eyes and her resolve melted. For now he seemed to have her under his spell.
"Now how about you let me buy you a drink?"
Against her better judgement Sunkitty let Tigga guide her down the hall and out of Tabby Hall.

Chapter 6

All over Tabby Hall, in small groups of two and three the tabbies were still searching in earnest for Simba's friend, Hector.
Oliver had told them "do not go alone - stay in a group at all times. The last thing we need is for another tabby to vanish without a trace."
Some searched in silence, some nervously chattered away, not wanting to believe that anything bad could have happened to one of their own.
Meanwhile in the grounds of Tabby Hall, Stripes, Stony, Solo and Sam were continuing with threir search. Stony was acting slightly jumpy, making sudden dashes here and there as the sounds of the breeze catching the trees would startle her. The other three trotted along, giggling and gossiping about the usual girly subjects - namely Oliver and his unbelievable furry underbelly.
"Don't you think we could be wasting our time here?" questioned Solo, afterall if the so-called 'cat burglar' is holding Hector, why would he still be hanging around Tabby Hall?".
"I agree", added Stripes. See that group of magpies on the grass over there? - I'd much rather be spending my time stalking up on them! If we caught one, we could have a small snack AND each collect some fine feathers to chew on!"
"Oh yes! Yes! Can we catch a magpie, PUUURRRRLEASE?" begged Stony. "Searching for Hector is BOOORING!".
"Listen girls!" intervened Samantha "Oliver is NOT going to be best pleased if he finds out we've spent the day chasing Magpies when there is a poor Tabby who' relying on us to rescue him!! So GET WITH THE PROGRAM and stop messing about!"
"Yes Samantha." The others said in unison. Solo, irritated by her sister's seriousness, stood behind Samantha miming a slient strangling gesture, but Stripes and Stony DARE NOT make a reaction even though they felt like laughing.

Chapter 7

As they reached the Japanese gardens, the sunlight glistened on the pond and an occasional tempting glimpse of a Koi carp, flashing through the water was slightly distracting, even to Samantha.
"We'll make our way to the pagoda and there we can sit and have a rest." Said Samantha who'd appointed herself 'group leader'. "I bought along a few nibbles that were left over from the party, we need to keep our strength up."
Stony shot off ahead of the group and disappeared into the pagoda. As the other three neared the pagoda, the sound of tinkling wind chimes sang out and a kind of rustling, paper-tearing sound.
"Thound a thrinkle ball!" Stony TRIED to say as Solo entered the pagoda, but with mouthfull of torn paper the words didn't quite come out right. Head down again, tearing away at the paper in an almost demented fashion, Stony imagined shredding one of the magpies.
"STOP!!!" shouted Sam. I see WORDS on that paper!" She was right, this was no crinkle ball, it was another note from the abductor, by now shredded into many soggy strips. Tears welled up in an embarrassed Stony's eyes. "I'm sorry, I'm still just a kitten.....I didn't mean it...".
"Don't worry, we can fix this!" reassured Stripes. It took a good fifteen minutes but the note was pieced together on the floor of the pagoda and despite a few saliva smeared sections, it could be read.

"TABBY FOOLS: You are running out of time! So is Hector. If you ever want to see him again, you'd better get your act together!
You make it worth my while and I'll return Hector to you unharmed. Ignore my demands and Hector will get it!
I know there are valuables stored at Tabby Hall and I want them in MY PAWS!!
Don't disappoint me. I'll contact you again to let you know what exactly I want. Make sure some one is waiting by the Tabbycom at 9pm tonight - or ELSE!"

"Quick girls! said Sam, scraping up the pieces of paper. We need to get back to the hall as quickly as possible, there's no time to waste!
Stony, don't worry about the note, we'll tell Oliver that we caught a magpie destroying it - he'll never know!"
Sam rolled her eyes, she didn't want to lie to Oliver but Stripes was right, there was no time for squabbling now - Hectors life depended on it.

Stoney walked proudly down tabby hall. In her hands she gingerly held the salivia covered crumpled up note that she and the other tabby girls had found in the pagoda. She held her hands out in front of her like a torch and her tail swished excitdly. Even though she was the youngest of the bunch she was given the honor of carrying the clue back to Oliber. It was an honor she took with great importance. Behind her Solo, Stripes and Samanth walked along amused by Stoney seriousness and, at the same time, concerned by what the newest information could mean for Hector.
"I just don't get it," Solo whspered unwilling to break Stoney's concentration. "What does the kidnapper hope to gain?"
"I agree," said Stripes. "It is most confusing, after all there have been no real demands...no real indication of how much ime we have to save Hector."
Samantha remianed silent. He concern grew with each word Solo and Stripes spoke. Her silnce contained her fear that in reality Hector may not have any time left at all.
Solo and Stripes seemed to sense Samantha's fear and fell int silence themselves. All three watch Stoney's tail switching excitedly as they continued down the hall unsure of what the next clue or the next moment might bring.
