Strange trifecta of symptoms - vets are puzzled

This forum is for cat lovers seeking everyday advice and suggestions on health-related issues. Remember, however, that advice on a public forum simply can't be a substitute for proper medical attention. Only your vet can say assuredly what is best for your cat.

My cat has had a strange trifecta of issues on and off for a year now. The worst symptom is that for about two hours she'll have these fits where she'll intermittently freeze up, crouch as if she's sitting normally, but she'll actually be hovering and straining to let out some fluid. Usually that fluid is clear, but it doesn't seem like urine because she continues to use the litter box for that. But sometimes there is a bit of blood in the liquid.

While these "fits" occur over a couple hours, she will likely also puke and poop outside the litter box. She acts like a normal cat before and after these episodes. You would never think she was sick.

I've seen 4 vets in the last 2 months and none know for sure what is wrong with her. The ER vet said it was a UTI, so she was on antibiotics for 10 days. She was good for a while after that, but got worse recently. Next week she'll have an ultrasound. We know only one kidney is fully functional. She's also lost about 4 pounds in the last 16 months, but she needed it (she weighed nearly 17 pounds). She's about 11 years old. This is probably a coincidence, but she shows no symptoms in warm weather months, even though she's indoor only (we live in Minneapolis).

Thanks for any help, or letting me know if you've seen anything similar.

I'm so sorry she's going through all of this. Have they ruled out any type of epilepsy or seizures? It sounds like a neurological disorder.

I think everyone but the vets have mentioned that. She actually doesn't freeze up as bad as she used to. When she first started that symptom a year ago, she was immoveable. I would try to stop her because I thought she was being naughty, and she would be like a stone.

I forgot to mention that during the first bout a year ago, expressing her anal glands and adding a second litter box to the first floor solved it. We were going in every 3 months for anal gland expression and everything was fine until December.

My feeling is it's still something neurological and you can see a kitty neurologist. I think it might be a good idea. After this ultrasound if they don't find anything, that's what I'd do. Poor thing. frown

With the cold weather comes heating and closed up houses. Could it be something to do with the heat or humidity in the house during the winter. Or maybe plants that are brought in for the winter?

It's so scary when the professionals don't know what's going on.hughug

Would a cat neurologist know whether the heat and/or lack of humidity are possible causes?

I was also thinking kitty acupuncture, regardless of the results from the ultrasound.

Gosh, poor baby!!!
You know, sometimes when Natalie is constipated, really constipated, she vomits after she tries to poop. On another occasion she actually peed while trying to....

I know it probably sounds weird, but our vet said it's from straining to go.

Not sure if thats whats going on with Amelia, but I hope they find out soon!

I don't think it's as simple as heat and humidity. Not when she's acting like that where it seems she's freezing in place while trying to go and looking the way she does. I think wait to see what the ultrasound shows but I would not rule out seeing a neurologist. It could be something that affects the position she gets in when trying to go. I'm just guessing of course but it's something to think about. I hope you find some answers. Please keep us posted okay? big grin

Wow, I have no idea what that could be. But I do hope the vet figures it out, and that Amelia's on the mend soon.
