My cat won't eat!

This forum is for cat lovers seeking everyday advice and suggestions on health-related issues. Remember, however, that advice on a public forum simply can't be a substitute for proper medical attention. Only your vet can say assuredly what is best for your cat.

Hi
I am hoping someone can help me and my cat. First a little history:
Moo is a short haired black and white(hence the name) tabby. We've had him since a kitten and he will be 4yrs(people yrs) in May. About a month ago he threw up and had diareha(spelling?) but just for a day or two...then he seemed better. Lately though, he is not interested in his food...he still comes for his morning feed but just looks at it sniffs but doesn't eat it.
We have tried a few things:

-new dry food - he ate a whole bowl when we got it that evening...then the next day wouldn't touch it
-canned food - same as above..but we actually had to feed it to him on a spoon and lead him into his dish..which he eventually ate out of..but not all - next day no interest
- he eats hard and soft treats no problem so I don't think it's a sore mouth or teeth
- getting desperate, I fed him a can of tuna...which he ate and I tried to mix in a little of the cat food and he ate a little but not a lot
-this morning - he wouldn't his food so I gave him tuna again

Another note...my boyfriend moved out last week and he was pretty close to Moo...I've read that Moo could be depressed and that is why he is not eating??

I would think if it is a medical thing that he wouldn't eat anything or am I wrong? Is it time for a vet visit? He seems healthy otherwise...drinking, peeing, pooping, playing a little and still likes to sleep with me close..very affectionate.

I don't know what else to do? Should I just keep feeding him tuna and slowly introduce his dry food again? I'm worried he won't be getting all of the nutrients he needs just eating tuna.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Lisa and Moo

I think it's time for a vet visit. A cat can get very ill if it goes 24 hours without food and you're right, a diet of tuna is not complete or healthy. Better to be safe and make sure there's nothing going on.

He could be depressed yes but that's not going to go away on it's own. Tuna definitely doesn't have the nutrients he needs and it contains mercury which is harder for them to process and filter. As BK said, a cat can get fatty liver disease within 48 hours of not eating enough, it happened to my Alex. You don't want to let it go that far! A vet visit is definitely the way to go and asap.

you def want to take him to the vet to get tests done as soon as possible, cats dont just not eat for no reason. I wish I had taken Sasha to the vet as soon as I started noticing she was eating less than normal, rather than have waited till when she almost completely stoppped eating before I realized there must be something wrong with her.

Definitely time for a vet visit, it could just be stress from the change in living situation, but not eating is serious.

So we took Moo(will post a pic soon) to the vet and they did blood work. His liver is a mess....he is jaundice. I have decided to take charge of his treatment so we are subcutaneously providing fluids daily, syringe feeding him high caloric food and supplementing with a Liver Tonic for cats by Alpha Omega. The vet is unsure of this product but I have read some good things about it. Has anyone used it with success? Moo is also on two antibiotics..just in case there is infection that was not caught in the bloodwork. He is also on an appetite stimulator and pepcid for stomach acid. I'm not sure if he really needs the antibiotics or the pepcid...am I overloading him?

anyhow, things are going well now...he had lost two pounds in a week! I'm really glad i didn't wait any longer. I am hoping for a full recovery!

Any other suggestions are welcome.
thanks

I'm glad you caught this in time and I wanted to bump it up to see if anyone has any thoughts. I do know that if you've started the antibiotics you shouldn't stop them before the course is finished, although I can't imagine why you're on two and my guess his that they're not helping your appetite. I would try to get some probiotics into you soon to help your belly. Let's see if someone else knows the answers to your other questions. Good luck Moo!
