VERY abnormal breathing! HELP!

This forum is for cat lovers seeking everyday advice and suggestions on health-related issues. Remember, however, that advice on a public forum simply can't be a substitute for proper medical attention. Only your vet can say assuredly what is best for your cat.

Glad your cat seems better smile

What injectable antibiotic did the vet give? I hope it wasn't Convenia shock Convenia can have some really nasty side effects on cats. Even worse is that it stays in the body for up to 2 months and you can't get it out if your cat has a reaction to it shock Here's a thread about it: http://www.catster.com/forums/Cat_Health/thread/701966 Convenia does work for some cats shrug

hmm I'll ask the vet if it was Convenia.. for now, I don't see any side effects. If she gets better and we do another shot of this next week, will she be finally free from this problem or do you think it's only temporary?

I just checked, it's Convenia.
The bill says: 1 Injection Convenia 80mg/ml
1 Injection
0.55 Convenia 80 mg/ml 10ml (1ml)

The thread you posted shows me it has bad side effects, what are they?

We did get a Convenia shot for my kittens when they had awful respiratory infections. Remember, any medication can have side effects, many of them severe--BUT they are not common. I remembered posts about avoiding Convenia at all costs, and so checked with not one but three vets before giving the shot--one of whom is a personal friend who lives too far away to be our regular vet,so makes no money off us, but specializes in cats and has been a vet for 30 years.
All three vets said they had seen side effects very rarely and then only in cats that were already badly debilitated. So while I'm sure they could happen in cats in not such bad shape, I thought it worth the risk as the kittens were just not getting better on any other treatment. So in my opinion, Convenia is not a bad choice, certainly much more accurate than trying to force liquid antibiotics!

All I can say on Convenia is that every one of my cats has had this injection at some point and none have had a noticeable negative side effect and it's been very effective. I think I can also say, by having a quick think, that almost all my cat owning friends have a cat who's also been given the Convenia shot and they haven't had any problems either. It's been out in the UK for quite a few years now.

I'm just reporting MY experiences of the Convenia shot and am not in any way 'poo-pooing' the reports of cats who have had an adverse reaction.

for now, she's not showing any side effects.. She is doing much better though, the weird breathing has gone down to about 40% of the time!

Thanks a million for the posts and answers!! You've been great! I'll keep you updated on her condition!

UPDATE: She started having slight symptoms again a week ago and now, it's gotten a little worse. The vet said she'll give her another shot of Convenia (as she had planned). We gave it to her last friday and now it's been 4 days since the second shot and she is still having slight symptoms...
Do you think it's normal for the symptoms to return a little? What about the second shot we gave her... Why didn't it help as much as it seemed to with the first one?

Guys the weird breathing is continuing... her behaviour is still the same though.

We have to decide if we should get her X-rayed, UV scanned, etc...
That would need anaesthesia and we don't know if she should get anaesthesia at her age. She is 14.

PLZ tell me if it's risky!!!!
Thanks in advance!!!
