Bald spots?!

When I became an adolescent cat I developed two patches of thinned hair just infront of my ears (one for each ear). The hair is so thin that my grey skin is easily visible in the patches. As I've gotten on in years (I'm now around 6 years old) the hair has gotten thinner there (ie. making the patches more noticeable) and the patches have gotten a bit bigger. We were told that it is a Burmese thing.

My questions are...
Have any of you heard of this too?
