My friend's kitten suddenly died

Whether a cat dies, is lost or stolen, or must be placed in a new home, this is the place to gather together to give and receive love and support when you experience the loss of a beloved cat.

And I'm having such a hard time comforting him. A few other reasonably bad things happened to him all at once, and..as pathetic as this is..I was hoping you guys would have some suggestions on how to properly comfort him without going overboard? Despite going through petloss myself, this is difficult.

The kitten was very young, just over a week or so. He was doing a great job with it (the mother was killed, struck by a car I believe?) up until earlier this afternoon where the baby suddenly died. The vet could do nothing to save it either.

Even if you don't have anything to contribute, I appreciate anyone even reading this~ hug

I'm so sorry for your friend's loss. The loss of a being that we care for, whether we've loved them for a week or 16 years, can so devastating. Sudden loss is especially traumatic, in my experience. Sending purrs of comfort to you and your friend.

There are actual pet grief counselors that can help when someone is grieving. Here is a link to one as a resource for you and your friend:

Purcy: Thank you for the kind words~ I never even interacted with it in person and am a mess over it!

Ava: Thanks for the warm thoughts. I've been telling him that it's better she died with him alongside her rather than in a shelter or out on the street.

Sally: I appreciate the link, and will pass it on. Thank you so much~

It is devastating to lose a kitten that young but there is nothing at all that could have been done to prevent it. Newborns are so very fickle, healthwise, and we don't know something is wrong until it's past the critical point. Your friend did all he could and because of him, that little kitten had love and friendship for the week that he was here.

I hope your friend starts to feel better soon and he's lucky to have such a caring friend in his life.

Yes, babies that young can go very quickly, and even if it had been at the animal hospital the same thing could have happened. At least it was safe and cared for, and did not die due to neglect.

Be there for your friend, and the hotline another CATSTER posted is a great idea. We have all lost furbabies, and no matter how long or short a time they owned us it always hurts.

We send soft paw pats and our meowmy sends hugs to your friend. When he has gotten over his loss perhaps he would want to open his home and heart to another cat (or two).

This is Delyte. Saddest purrs to you and your friend. They are right, the kitten knew that he was being loved and despite whatever physical problem took his little life, knew that you were there for him. It sounds callous but the best thing your friend could do, as soon as it can be done, is to save another kitten. The little kitten who died is now happy on the Rainbow Bridge, and will be even happier seeing that another little lost soul who might die from neglect will instead have a happy life. Your friend might want to get rid of the things from the deceased kitten and clean a bit, in case it was a contagious disease that took him, but when they are so young like that it is more often something they were born with. Literally they are born to be angels, but you can encourage your friend to get another to keep here on earth for a while. Such a sad thing to happen ....cry
