Does anyone adopt older cats?

This is a special section for cats needing new homes and for inspiring stories of cats that have found their furever home through Catster or through the love and energy of rescuers. This is also the place to discuss shelters, rescue organizations, rescue strategies, issues, solutions, etc. and how we can all help in this critical endeavor. Remember that we are all here for the love of cat! If you are posting about a cat that needs a new home, please put your location in the topic of your thread so those close by can find you! Make sure to check out Catster's cat adoption center!

I have mostly kittens now (by chance), but I love older cats. There's an older stray male who roams the streets whom I'd adopt in a heartbeat if he'd just get in a trap. I won't go so far as to say older cats need more love than younger ones, but I think there's more to overcome with them, and that makes them extremely appreciative when they do find good homes.

Well, our rescue doesn't consider a cat to be "older" till it's over the age of 8. Those are the ones that are extremely hard to place because most people don't want to get attached to a cat that may only have a few years left here before they cross the Bridge. My rescue Mom, who's also the boss of the rescue, actually pulled me from Animal Control for another group who thought that even though I'm diabetic, since AC said I was only 4, they thought they'd have a good chance at adopting me out. My medicine isn't THAT expensive. BUT, when she got me home, & got busy, she didn't actually look at my medical records, & when she did, she saw my rabies cert said I was 10. She called the vet's office, told them she had me, & they looked up my records. They gave her my birthday, which means I was 11 when she got me. Once she told the group that asked to to get me for them my real age, they didn't want me anymore & advised her to just take me BACK to Animal Control! My Mom said they were crazy, & that if I was taken back, AC would KILL me, just because of my age! So here I am! I really hope SOMEONE will decide to give me a home. If not, I AM home, because my family loves me just as I am.

Working at a no-kill shelter for the past 11 years, it's definitely true that adult cats don't move that fast. Even cats considered young, like 2 or 3 years old, don't move that fast and can stay at the shelter for months before going to their furever home. The older the cat, the longer they usually stay. frown

Mum just adopted me last Thursday.
I an nine years young and was rescued from a house with over thirty other cats.
I was taken to a small shelter along with my granddaughter who is eighteen months old, mum adopted us both.
We aren't really socialised, I am better than Keaira, but it's going to take a while to gain our confidence.
