If it dont- crunch get it- off my food-mat |
| Purred: Sat Nov 7, '09 5:45pm PST | | | | | | Hello! My name is Precious and my mommy is very concerned because i refuse to eat wet food. (see details in our "my 12 week old kitten wont eat wet food" under the food forum). Mommy has told me several people have suggested possible doing a raw diet. But my mommy is not a carnivore like me so she is extremely paranoid about food borne illness for me and her. Right, now my mommy give Royal Canine for kittens w/ science diet for Kittens and some Kitten chow (she says for cost she had to use a cheaper 3rd one, she is trying to balance between all the dry
foods). My mommy needs help knowing what to do to make me eat better. I have turned my nose up and shook my paw at all the wet food she's given me, science diet, whiskas, fancy feast, wellness, tiki cat, and iams. Basic questions my mommy has: Can she cook me meat? or does it have to be raw? and What is the best meats to feed me? (mommy cant give me fish, she has an allergy) Please help my mommy keep me healthy!

www.catinfo.org
www.catnutrition.org
www.mypetcarnivore .com
These are all awesome websites that helped me switch my cats to raw.
There is no reason to be paranoid about germs from raw meat. If you can do things as simple as wipe the counter down, and wash your hands you are at no risk. Many people prepare meats for them selves daily. It is the same for your cat.
You are making the right choice by deciding to try a raw diet.
One important thing is to not give up if she doesnt like it at first!
My cats are incredibly picky but with a lot of patience and trickery, are certified carnivores.
I am fairly new to raw myself (about 4 months) and I can not praise it enough. Before switching my cats to raw they were dull, shedded a lot and generally lazy. Since switching, their coats are luxurious and their energy level is through the roof! Not to mention, that littler box smell is nonexsistent.
I believe a raw diet is essential for a cat to obtain optimum health, if thats your main concern then you are on the right track.
Please keep us posted and let us know if you have any more questions.

| Purred: Sun Nov 8, '09 5:45am PST | | | | | | Hi Precious!
1. Yes, you can try cooking the meat at first to see if she will eat it. One of the ways to start cats on a raw diet is to cook the meat and gradually cook less and less until it is raw. The best thing to do is par-broil the meat (i.e., boil in only water). Make sure that it is cooled off before serving!!! Most people try with chicken or another fowl first. Of course, you can just try raw first off. Do not add spices or anything to the meat if you cook it and don't fry it in oil!
2. Do you ever cook meat for yourself (I'm not sure if you said you are a vegetarian)? Anyway, just the same precautions that you use with meat for yourself, you use to prepare raw for your cat. Clean everything in hot, soapy water and don't leave raw meat sitting around at room temp for hours at a time. Cat's have short digestive tracts that are made for processing meat efficiently. Food and any bacteria do not generally hang around long enough for infections to occur. I've been feeding raw for almost a year now with no adverse incidents.
3. Start small and don't expect a lot at first, although you never know, maybe she'll suprise you. Does she hang around the kitchen when you prepare food for yourself at all? You can try the "oops, I dropped that meat by mistake" method and see if she snarfs it up because she thinks she's getting away with something.
4. Is she interested in fish at all? Although it is not recommended to feed tuna, especially human tuna in a can, to cats you could try to pour some tuna juice over whatever you want her to eat to see if that gets her going. Of course, she might just lick it off. You could do this with the canned as well as raw.
Maybe she is secretly holding out for raw meat! You could also try giving her a chicken wing or a chicken gizzard. They are fun for kittens to chew on, maybe you could start her off that way. If she is teething at all, she might go for them.
Best of luck!

| Purred: Sun Nov 8, '09 9:35am PST | | | | | | I did try to give her tuna from the can once she wouldn't have it. I have a small allergy to fish so i can not feed fish. I do eat meat, mostly chicken. I will give her some when i cook dinner tonight. is baking it okay? with no spices is how i usually do my chicken.
i'm worried she is a self declared vegetarian.

Unlikely.
In addition to the great info above, you might try another trick. Food for a cat is as much about texture as taste. If she likes crunching kibble, conversion will be hard. You might try slightly wetting down the kibble. The taste will be the same but she'll have to get used to a new texture. If she can conquer the texture, you can start changing the flavor.
I'm totally making this up, btw. I haven't tried it. But it makes surface sense anyway.
Let's see, I'll post as my strongest holdout: Shelley.

| Purred: Mon Nov 9, '09 4:25pm PST | | | | | | Actually, starting by sprinkling a bit of water on the kibble does work . Over the course of a couple of weeks, just add a bit more, and let it sit a bit longer, so it becomes softer.
Another good switch method is first to canned, then raw. Here's another site to help with that:
