I may be small,- but I'm scrappy.

Hi, my name is James and I'm a newly adopted kitten. I'm 14 weeks old (at least that is what the shelter told my new parents) and I love my new home. In my new home I have an older brother, Jack, that I've only met once (he hissed at me and ran off). I've been told that since I have a small sore near my ear that I have to remain separated from my brother until the VET says its okay.

My new parents are concerned that I may not have learned how to properly clean myself while I was in the shelter. Because...well...I kind of smell stinky near and around my tail.

Please help. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Ya gotta be more specific, mol, its ok, to use the correct terminology, and/or be very descriptive. Is he stinky because he gots poopies stuck to his back end? Does he have diarea? Is he LH or SH? For example, if I was replying to a post, about crystals/urinary/bladder issues, in a male cat, I would tell the person, one sign that you may have issues, is you would see his penis protruding. Its the correct terminology. waveway to gohug

James is a DSH and the stink is like he has some poopy residue somewhere on his backend (or back paws). His bum doesn't look dirty, infact it looks clean. I don't think he has diarraha - I've checked his box when I clean it.

Check his back end, and his back paws, to make sure, there is no poopies stuck to it, or diarea stuck to it. He may have stepped in his poopies. If they are clean, and the box is clean, then it just might be the smell of where he came from. Kinda like if walked into the bathroom, after someone, then you smell like the bathroom smell.

Another suggestion, is to give him a bath. Use Johnsons baby shampoo, use like just a dab, dilute it with water, in a plastic cup, then pour it over him, then rinse, rinse, rinse, and rinse some more. He's not going to a show, so you don't need to wash him above the neck. Mine are show cats, the kittens get their first training bath around 12 weeks. I have also used Suave baby shampoo. Just never never never never use dandruff shampoo, it will kill them.

It might also be his poopies that smell, and not him. What do you feed, and has he been wormed yet? Never use over the counter wormer products, and never never never use Hartz anything. Take him to your vet, and have him wormed with Drontal. Kittens are first wormed at 6 weeks. You might want to contact the shelter, and ask, if he was wormed, and when, and with what.

I would also ask, what shots he has had, and when, they should have given all this to you, when you picked him up. I would still take him to your vet, get a check up, and get on a shots schedule. You also want to get him Feline Leukema tested.

Hope this helps. waveway to gohug

Thanks for the reply. We took him to the vet the day after we adopted him. According to the shelter's paperwork it doesen't look like they had dewormed him, though they had given him his first set of boosters. The vet gave him his second set of boosters. He tested neg for Feline leuk/Feline HIV. The only thing we are waiting on is the fungal test and I have to give the vet a stool sample to check for worms to determine if he needs to be dewormed.

My husband said the same thing about him possibly still smelling like the shelter.

We are currently feeding him Purina One Kitten Chow.

Would "kitty wipes" work? I've seen those in Petco and wondering if it would be less tramatic then a half bath and just as effective?

Thanks again

I never used kitty wipes, but we use unscented baby wipes, for things that may come up, and/or accidents, at the shows, we never travel without them, mol. laugh out loud

All kittens have worms, thats just how it is, mol, even kittens born to championship show kitties, mol, and all kittens need to be wormed. Talk to your vet about Drontal. big grin

You might want to re-consider feeding Purina One.

I highly recommend, you feed him a grain free, by product free, gluten free kitten food. Grains are one of many causes of crystals, and IBD issues. By products are the left over anything, including euthinized cats/dogs and their collors. Glutens cause IBD issues too, and were the cause of the Menu Foods saga of 2007.

I f he does not have poopies or diarea, stuck to his back end or paws, and the cat box is clean, I suspect too, its just the smell of the shelter, which wears off in a few days, mol. I never used them, but it seems to me, that I have heard of prob what you have described, the kitty wipes, just read the package, and make sure it says its safe for kittens.

Hope this helps. waveway to gohug

I've used the Cat Bathing Wipes in the past, but only on an adult cat. I agree with Bumpurr, go with the Unscented Baby Wipes. They are cheaper, and know they would be safe on a kitten. And we also agree he needs to be dewormed, even if the vet did not find anything in his stool.

Welcome to CATSTER, little boy, we love to read about shelter kitties getting good homes.

Toast is about 15 weeks old now, but when I got him from the shelter at 7 weeks he didn't know how to clean himself entirely and was a DLH, which made it even worse. The vet told me I had to keep cleaning his back end until he learned to do it himself.

Kittens learn good grooming habits and good kitty box habits, from the momma kitty. A rescue kitten, depending on the circumstances, may not have had that advantage. But it sounds like Toast, way cool name, and James, now have a very good home and very loving parents. They will be up to speed in no time. laugh out loudwaveway to gohug
