Brush, good diet, and become best friends with a quality vacuum that has a powerful upholstery attachment! wink Since you're in a small apartment, you'll need to vacuum, sweep, and de-fuzz daily to keep it under control. You can try lint brushes (either the sticky tape kind or fabric ones that are reusable) for your bed. Or, if you can, throw your comforter in the dryer every so often (bonus - it'll smell clean too!).

Spring and Summer at my house is BAD for hair - it flies around on the hardwood floors and I have to warn guests about which chairs are "safe" to sit on! laugh out loud It takes a good amount of work to keep the place clean!

Most long haired cats need some help with their fur. Since I started showing Maine Coons, I have learned the fine art of the cat shampoo. And learned that shampooing my cats (especially Harvey) removes TONS of dead fur. I highly recommend the occasional shampoo. My cats have no hairball problems because they are shampooed regularly. Yes, we do have shedding, but we would have more shedding if I didn't shampoo them regularly. Any shampoo that works for your cat is fine. Maine Coons tend to get greasy, and dish detergent is often used. Find out what shampoo works for your cat. Persians are high maintenance animals. Cat show exhibitors spend up to three hours preparing them for shows. Personally, I think that if you aren't up to grooming your long haired cat, you should have chosen a short hair. On the other hand, using that as an excuse to put the cat in a shelter sounds cruel. Learn to groom. I don't know about Persians, but I know that there are Internet sites that tell you how to groom a Maine Coon, so I assume that it's the same for Persians.

Even though I'm not a long haired kitty, I shed incredible amounts, more than the three other cats in my house put together. My diet is regulated due to some delicate stomach issues, so I'm eating healthy. Keeping my fur under control takes frequent brushing, which I love cloud 9 and bathing. I get baths because I have issues with not being the best self groomer, however, it also helps with my shedding. I don't know how it works on Persians, but Mommy says the Furminator brush works wonders on me. The amount of hair it removes is incredible. Besides grooming, my parents arm themselves with a lint brush and a vacuum. They're necessary tools with a shedder like me around... but I'm worth it happy dance

The Furminator is great, but damages the hair. If you're not showing your cat, then that's not so much of a problem. But the Zoom Groom works very well with all cats, and many cats enjoy the massage feel it gives.

If we love our cats "Madly".....how could we ever think of putting them in a shelter just because of shedding?
We could have fur covered "EVERYTHING"...but we know mommy loves us and would never rid of us because of shedding!
But my Mommy's love for us is very deep!!!!!!!!!!
Use a brush of some kind. It works wonders.

Harvey, I'm curious, if you get a lot of hair out during a bath, do you have to put a strainer over the drain?? Seriously, woudn't it clog your pipes? confused

Hi! I'm a purrrrbred persian and my buddy Santana is a show persian, and yeah, we are high maintenance. I get a bath weekly and Santana gets it twice a week. Mommy uses Metro Air Force pet hair dryer and she is very happy with it because it takes little time to dry our fur (and make it look good, too).

Mommy uses Greyhound antistatic comb to groom us daily and she uses flea comb for heads, paws, faces and sometimes other parts.

Mommy was told to comb 15 minutes a day each of us but she doesn't do that - she says she is too lazy for thatsmile.

Mommee also uses anti-static spray for both our coats and carpet and couch.

We had no hair at all anywhere before Santana came to us. Santana is sick, so now mommee is not bathing him and we have hair here and there. Mommy wets rubber gloves and take the hair, it's easy. Papa bought cordless vacuum cleaner Electrolux and mommy loves it because it is light and... cordless.

Tubby tabby- love!

Isabelle--good question. Yes, before a show bath, I put a cover over the drain. In fact, I put two covers over the drain, one a disposable paper thing, and the other a plastic cover with small holes. That catches most of the hair. Still, I usually find hair in the hole of the bathtub (there's a kind of metal thingie in there that catches hair). Show baths don't involve only the right shampoos and rinses and the right drying techniques, but also this kind of preparation.

Actually, regarding shedding, I've found that my short haired Spike (generic tabby moggie) sheds more than anyone else. This is because his underfur seems to be more plentiful than with the Maine Coons. So he's the one who gets the Furminator and Zoom Groom, especially during shedding season in the spring. He'll tolerate a quick shower, but no go with the dryer; I've only washed him twice, both times after he lost control of his bladder on a trip to the vet. But he loves being Furminated and Zoom Groomed. Good old Spike.

We shed too, mom uses a swiffer A LOT to get hair off the floor, and it really helps. Also keep the vaccuum clean, so it can suck up A LOT of hair, and when the weather we get taken outsisde for our brushing, so the hair flies away out there instead of inside. She also has those sticky hair pick up rolls in every room, so she can wipe up shedding messes.
