1) feed a high quality diet

2) bath (baths do help work out loose/dead fur)

3) brush often (we recommend the Zoom Groom and Furminator - they both really get out a lot of loose/dear fur and undercoat)

I agree that a bath is an often overlooked and very effective solution. Lots of loose and dead fur comes out--enough to plug up the drain! Ever since I've started bathing my cats, the shedding and hairball problems have virtually disappeared. Also, aside from the Zoom Groom, a Furminator is good, although I would only recommend it for short haired cats. Finally, for really getting out the dense underfur that comes out in the spring and summer, a metal comb is more efficient than a brush.

Even kitties with hardly any hair can be shedding machines!! Kinda like dogs, people think pugs wouldn't shed much because of their lack of hair- have you ever sat on a couch with a pug??? It's gross.

But, the solution to excessive shedding is a proper diet and LOTS of brushing. Us kitties LOVE to be brushed- and, it helps with shedding, too!!! So, tell your mom to get that brush ready and believe me, you'll be purring.
