Mom spends about $100.00 a month on canned food and $20-40 on dry. (It depends on how many friends stop by to eat) There are 5 of us now. She has tried to give us science diet or natural cat food, and we stick our nose up at the stuff. Our canned food must be minced or ground and right now we prefer Fancy Feast. We share 3 cans in the morning and 3 at night. Plus we have Purina one dry all the time available to us. Mom bought our youngest brother special kitten food at $17.oo a bag, and he ate if for a couple of weeks, the rest of us helped a little, but now he only wants our big boy food. So mom mixes his kitten food with our big boy food so he will get the extra vitamens.
I eat a 4 lb. bag of Purina U/R in 3-4 weeks, which is about $25.
Turtle & Ava eat Solid Gold's Indigo Moon, which is a 3 lb (I think?) bag every 1 1/2-2 weeks, which is about $12.
Moo (an outside cat) eats Purina Healthful Life, about a 4 lb bag a week, $7.
So in a month, we spend approximately $70-ish. Not as bad as some of you all!
But when you factor in litter, which is at least $15 a week, flea/tick/heartworm prevention, which is $150 every three months since we have to buy two sizes, and toys, it gets a little crazy! I don't think a lot of people realize what they're in for when they get pets.
Angel eats Stella and Chewy's raw food. We get an employee discount but the retail cost is about $14 a month, or $0.44 a meal. I usually buy a three month supply at a time so we can mix them up and give her some variety.
You guys are right about costs adding up though. I can track my purchases with the register system at work and this past year I spent more than twice the national average amount that people spend on their cats. That doesn't even count stuff I don't buy from work
Oh man, well it's not fair to judge right now because ive been doing alot of buying to figure out something good for Phil's allergies, so I've bought lots of stuff he won't eat, or has had some and had a terrible reaction. Once he settles in, it will be much better. Luckily in brooklyn, I don't have a car and don't worry about gas prices and I have a natural et food store with very very good prices, although lets not talk about rent ;-).
I probably spend about 10$ on Avederm select cut cans a week (.89 a can! you can't beat that! and its grain free!) and he gets, for now at least, NV instinct Rabbit, which is about 16$ for the 5lb bag, which lasts a while. Although I just bought a bag of Rocky Formula Call of the Wild, since it's only 10$ a bag and will soon be feeding two cats when I move in with my boyfriend. I also have a 4 lb bag of NV raw Rabbit in the freezer for a treat when Phil's tum gets better. I'll have better control over his eating habits when I move out of my current apt. Right now, if i let him out of my room he sneaks bits of my roomates Cat friskies...sneaky Devil. I'm guessing i'll spend about 20-30$ a week on food when All is settled, but that doesnt count all the toys and treats I buy him everytime I go to the Pet store
Annie is very cheap to feed. She refuses to eat any kind of wet food, but she's very good about drinking her water (although most of it she ends up stealing from the dog bowls). A big bag of Performatrin costs about $30 and lasts her almost three months. I must say, now that I think about it, and see all the other responses, I wonder if I'm spending enough on her.
I spend about $20/week on food for one cat. She gets a mix of canned food and raw. -- before we got on this diet we were in and out of the vet office with horrible bills each time... but now that we are on as close to an appropriate 'cat diet' as we can get... the vet bills are no longer there.
Right now I pay for my own kitten's food. The other housecats belong to different family members, but me solely, I pay $9.99 for a bag of Wellness Kitten Health. He is on half a bag already. This is his first bag.
Normally I buy two cans of Wellness turkey as a mix in/topper. Which is about $1.59 a can.
Mom doesn't even want to think about what she spends on pet food. We have 5 cats here and 3 dogs, 2 of which are St Bernards and we all eat premium such as Solid Gold, Wellness, Merrick etc.
