Plastic is bad. I've also read to avoid ceramic bowls made in china because they could have lead in the paint. We use the wal-mart stainless bowls for water and some cuter stainless bowls from petsmart that have a plastic decorated layer on the outside and stainless on the inside. So you can have decorated bowls without the iffy paint issue.
