When Mr.- Nigelsworth gets- angry...

I am currently eating Science Diet c/d but the ingredients suck! I want to switch to a holistic/natural food, but I want to make sure I don't get crystals again. I have read many reports of cats getting crystals that eat dry Wellness, I have read that Evo is not for all cats. Also my vet has said to stay away from chicken based foods.

note: I DO eat canned food in the a.m. and p.m. so this is for me to nibble on during the day while mommy is at work. Also, by brother refuses to eat much canned food, so it has to be something that is good for him too. He has a weak immune system, so I want something that will be healthy for him as well.

Nigel Pibb, sorry but there is no dry food prescription or not that will cure or keep struvite crystals away. I know I have gone through this. Cats fed a dry diet will never drink enough water to hydrate themselves. They need to get the water from the food they eat. As for your other cat if he has an low immune system then a high protein wet food is the best for him aswell. L-lysine(amino acid) is known to boost a cats immune system aswell.
Please read the site called catinfo.org and also this one which has many links in it aswell.

Hi Shadow,

Thanks for the response. We are trying to get Silly (Sylvester) to eat more canned food. He is currently on L-Lysine twice a day and both him and Mr. Pibb are on Paw Gel multivitamin. Hmmm, so what is a kitty to nibble on during the day when mommy is at work?

Mr. Pibb, I have to say that I've been thinking that your photo is too cute and, although off topic, I'm sorry about your foster brother.

Anyway, you know kitties don't need to nibble all day, you can go hours w/o having to nosh on something. I work too and my guys get fed 3x a day plus treats if I'm training them and that's it. They have flourished this way and really enjoy their food when they get it.

I do have a suggestion for something to leave out if you really feel that you need to; how about ZiwiPeak Daily Cat Cuisine? It is an air dried, jerky like food with few ingredients and it comes in lamb, venison, and venison & fish flavors. I can't find it in stores, but I have ordered it from onlynaturalpetfood.com (http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/products/ZiwiPeak-Daily-Cat-Cuisine-D ry-Food/311016.aspx). Again, I don't know if you would be interested in something like that, but it is another option.

Purrs,
Smudge

Smudge is right about having food down all day. Cats do not need to have food down all day. Its actually good for cats to go without for a while, as it gives them time to digest the food. If there is a constant food available it a plays havoc on the pancreas, and also raises the ph of urine just by them being able to smell the food. Not sure how much your cat weighs, but putting down some in the morning then some when you get home, and you can even give a tiny bit before you go to bed.

the problem is that 3 days of the week I have school right after work so I leave at 7 a.m. and don't get back until 11 on those days. I'd hate to leave them that long with nothing.

Hi there- I completely agree with those who said your kitty doesn't NEED to nibble all day long. But I understand where you're coming from. You want them to be able to eat if they are hungry while you're gone, and when you get back you feed them the wet food. To be honest, that's what my parents do too.

Tabitha is a water LOVER but only eats dry food. I dont worry about her consumption. Buddy and Leo however don't drink a lot of water, so we also feed them the wet food.

Last time I tried a new food on them was Chicken Soup- it's healthy, has good ingredients, and may help your crystals problem (my kitties haven't had it, but as we know, all kitties are different). It also won't break the bank.

Good luck!

The best kind of wet food to get for the case of struvite crystals is one that has no grain, and no fruits and Vegies, or potato.
These things raise the glycemic index, which is not good.

I think 7am - 11 pm is too long for a cat to go without any food. What about a timed feeder? You can get some that are suitable to put a wet food meal in.
