GO!

looking but bummed...

If you are wondering what is the right cat for you, this is the place to be. In this introductory forum we talk about topics such as breed vs. mix, size, age, grooming, breeders, shelters, rescues as well as requirements for exercise, space and care. No question is too silly here. This particular forum is for getting and giving helpful, nice advice. It is definitely not a forum for criticizing someone else's opinion, knowledge or advice. This forum is all about purring and learning.

like everyone says, i would just keep waiting until you see the kitten you know is yours.
it sounds lame and cliche, but it DOES happen! when i was planning on getting a kitten, i planned on looking at many different shelters and rescues so i could get the one i knew i wanted. i have a friend that fosters unwanted kittens so her house was my first stop. Peanut was the very first cat i was shown, and i fell in love with him RIGHT away. i thought that it was only the beginning though, and shouldn't adopt the first one i met, so i went to a few other shelters and looked. but i couldn't stop thinking about Peanut and no other cats seemed to compare. So i guess i just went the "love at first site" route.
I was lucky and it was the first cat i was shown, but it does take time sometimes - so keep looking. I would keep going until you see a cat you really can't live without, instead of picking a kitten that you really don't feel a connection with because you want a kitten.
Good luck and keep us updated

Rosie,

it is the very same one. Gracie was adopted a day or so before her page went live and she was 9 weeks old at the time. She had two orange and a black sibling, and she was the first one of her family to go. I seem to remember that both the litters and moms there at the time had orange kittens. We almost adopted one of those, but Gracie wouldn't let us leave without her (it's like she was waiting for us). laugh out loud

When the kitten bug starts to bite, remember, kittens grow up and don't stay kittens forever. Remember, an animal is for life. Does it have to be a kitten? Older cats need loving homes too.

Nina,

the OP did say that she would like to see a cat grow up along her dog. Given that she has a dog already, she knows all about the reality of kitten/puppy cute turning into an adult that you gotta love regardless.

Besides, not all adopters who go for a kitten regret it later when the kitty is not small and "cute" anymore. Gracie was a scraggly little thing with claws, and we initially had "too young, too small, but aw she's gosh darn adorable" feelings, but she's since grown into a very loving, gorgeous cat, and we love her more than ever now.

That said, there's something to be said for not having to survive 9 months of kitten crazies, and an older cat who is known to get along with dogs might be an even better investment than raising a kitten to be dog friendly. shh

I had the same experience as Peanut. After my Felix passed away, I knew I wanted another Russian Blue. I saw Coop on the shelter's website, but I went in to have our first visit with the intention that if he didn't like me, I'd move on.

Didn't happen. Little boy wouldn't leave my lap, and then he cried when it was time for me to go.

Ummm...I think we all know how this one eneded.big grinhamster dance

Anyway...I agree. You'll know when it's the right one. You'll find each other.

Good luck and purrs to you!way to go

Happy cried when I left him the first night. It was horrible. We did the kitten route with Kali and she was all scraggly and sick and really ugly and now she's sleek, beautiful, perfectly proportioned, a gorgeous girl. Happy was already older, but not much bigger, but he more than doubled in size within two months. He still looks like a kitten in how his body looks and he moves which is scary, b/c he's 11 lbs. We think he will end up being 13-15 lbs without being overweight.

Both of these cats just claimed us, especially Happy. Kali was A LOT of work, though, b/c she was only 2 lbs, so we had to foster her until she was big enough to spay. Happy was already fixed, so he was much easier to adopt.

There are pros and cons to everything. I really enjoy the age they are at now. They understand no. They are not sickly. Kali is not using me as a tree. They are mellow, but still active. Happy, especially, romps all around for no reason. Very entertaining.

I can't wait to see what cat you end up with.

Bam Margera

Deamon Cat of- Barker Street

Bam was an oops litter to a purebred Siamese show cat, that wanted to just get rid of the kittens. I started out with Bam and his brother Dunn, Dunn now lives happily with his sister Bethory and his Mama Cat Raven. Bam picked me, because well his personality is just as catankorous as mine. Dunn, just got the stuffin beat out of him as he was too laid back for Bam's antics. So getting two siblings from the same litter dosn't ALWAYS work out.
