If you are wondering what is the right cat for you, this is the place to be. In this introductory forum we talk about topics such as breed vs. mix, size, age, grooming, breeders, shelters, rescues as well as requirements for exercise, space and care. No question is too silly here. This particular forum is for getting and giving helpful, nice advice. It is definitely not a forum for criticizing someone else's opinion, knowledge or advice. This forum is all about purring and learning.

*scratch* DON'T- STOP PETTING- ME!! |
| Purred: Thu Jun 18, '09 2:22pm PST | | | | | | Well we keep rolling around the idea of getting a new puppy. But the problem with that is we are trying to get pregnant. And having a puppy possibly being around 9 to 12 months when I actually had a baby, would probably be extremely difficult! But we just are both feeling like we want to expand our family and get another pet. Cats are so much easier to care for then dogs, since there is no major training involved. And we have a cat room. Yes a room weve got set up specifically for Tyger. But we have been thinking we want to fix it up a bit anyways, so I was just thinking today, why not get a kitten!?!
Tyger likes attention and LOVES to play, but we dont always have the time for it and shes by herself in that room when we are not home. So I was thinking, would it be a good idea to get another cat or kitten for her to play with? How would I go about doing this? Tyger seems to adjust very well. She does fine with dogs, and usually stands her ground. But she hasnt been around another cat since she was a kitten so Im not sure how well this would go??? Do you think she would get territorial? She doesnt get mad when the dog goes in her room, but Im not sure about another cat...

Keep us posted, and good luck!!!

| Purred: Fri Jun 19, '09 9:11am PST | | | | | | I would LOVE to get an adult cat. And hopefully when we move to Alaska I am actually planning on building a cat enclosure in our new home(because hubby will have a better job and we will have a lot of extra money). Im planning to adopt some of the older cats at the shelters there. But for now, hubby has a thing about getting baby animals. He doesnt like to get older ones, and I havent been able to convince him otherwise so far. I think he just enjoys the younger year with them too much. Im not up for getting into an argument with him over it right now. But hopefully when we move to Alaska | | | | |

People only want the "cutzie" kittens, and once they are past 6 months they are unwanted. Between 6 months and one year they are very hard to adopt out, but they still are kittens, Maybe your husband would be interested? Tell him he would be saving a little life.

We have a puppy right now and though we adore her she did get bitten by another dog so now we have to work on socializing her with nice dogs. As for the hubby, I don't want you to get in an argument but maybe you could ask him to read an article from the Humane Society of United States about adopting older pets. Since I think if you could ask him to give it a try because most shelters will allow you to take them back if you decide that it isn't working out. Though If you don't want to the kittens still need a home too so at least adopting from the shelter is admirable. So with that thought Kittens are some work, its good you have a cat that can mentor. So just think about Tyger's reaction, sometimes cats like being only cats. I have to say no matter what age you get your pet at some just end up with certain likes dislikes even though you can be more influential, I still think sometimes their are somethings you can't change even if you have them from time of birth. Good luck with everthing.

The idea of getting a 6 month old to a year old is a good idea. You help save an older cat, yet your husband can still enjoy the kittenhood months.
