Male or Female. What Do You Prefer?

If you are wondering what is the right cat for you, this is the place to be. In this introductory forum we talk about topics such as breed vs. mix, size, age, grooming, breeders, shelters, rescues as well as requirements for exercise, space and care. No question is too silly here. This particular forum is for getting and giving helpful, nice advice. It is definitely not a forum for criticizing someone else's opinion, knowledge or advice. This forum is all about purring and learning.

Our Mom has also had good luck with boy cats. Although she never made a conscious decision to adopt male vs. female, all of her cats have coincidentally been males (neutered) and they have all been sweet and affectionate. Some of her friends' female kitties are just as sweet and loving, and she has also met some not-so-friendly male cats, so she really does go by personality, not the gender. smile

Around here, I'm the love bug, follow Meowma everywhere, sleep with her, cuddle on her, etc and I'm a girl.--the late Rocky (male) was a big clown and loved to play, but no snuggling to amount to anything.
The new kitty, Ringo, is a boy, has not really developed a purrsonality yet, but he likes to rub back and forth on Meowma and be petted, about half the time.

Wow thanks for responding everyone!!!
I really love my boys. I find them goofy, active and just plain old silly. The 2 female kittens we fostered (Rodney's sisters) I found to be very shy and timid. They loved to cuddle and play but I found them to be alot more mellow. When it was getting close to the time they could go back to the animal shelter for adoption, the shelter said we could keep one for free. I really wanted the biggest female. We called her Scrappers. She, for some reason, wouldn't eat dry food only wet, and loved to cuddle and climb. Freckles the second sister was the most beautiful of the three but she didn't have the personality for our lifestyle. She was very lazy and quiet. When it came down to it, we ended up keeping Rodney. Partly because, being born feral, he had still retained some fighter instincts more than the girl...but mainly because when it came time to take them to he shelter Sabre wouldn't let us anywhere near him. He knew what was happening. MOL it was his way of saying "No. I want this one" .

Mom used to strongly prefer female animals, whether dogs or cats, but then she met me and I changed everything. laugh out loud I'm the first male pet she's ever been able to bond with, actually.

I guess I'm just special. dancing

I like both to be honest..to me i guess it depends on the breed of cat. Just for example..in maine coons i would prefer to get a male..but my dream kitty such as a siamese i would prefer to get a female. I guess it just a matter of opinion..Mol..

I grew up with male cats and my last cat was a male. Now I have Trixy my first female cat. Before Trixy came into our lives I would have went with male cats all the way. Since Trixy is so young still I don't think it would be fair to judge yet. But the female cats that have been in my extended family they have all been a little on the mean side. So I guess right now I am up in the air. big grinwink

not a big difference to mom but she perfers females over males. Mom finds that males are more lovey and lay on her lap and that us females are more standoffish, and reserved which mom kinda likes.shock

Mommie says she doesn't really have a preference. It is mainly about purrsonality. right now there are two girls and one boy living in our house, but if you count Mommie's Bridge kitties she is even at three girls and three boys!big grin

Mommy too says it's a personality thing. Right now Boris is the lovey dovey of us two, and I'm the energetic one. Now that I am older, I am slowing down some, but I still can zip around like gangbusters when I feel like it.

She says about the only difference between the two of us is that Boris is shameless in his quest for love and affection, whereas I am more reticent to ask for pets... that isn't to say I don't welcome them, though. Of the two of us, I am the louder purrer, and I will allow mom to pet me longer than Boris does (in fact mom has never had a problem with me telling her "I've had enough pets!" with my teeth, like she does with Boris).
