Help me find a new baby!

If you are wondering what is the right cat for you, this is the place to be. In this introductory forum we talk about topics such as breed vs. mix, size, age, grooming, breeders, shelters, rescues as well as requirements for exercise, space and care. No question is too silly here. This particular forum is for getting and giving helpful, nice advice. It is definitely not a forum for criticizing someone else's opinion, knowledge or advice. This forum is all about purring and learning.

It's all about- ME!

Hi, I am looking to add a new feline baby to my family! But I am kind of having a difficult time! Because I have so many requirments! I would love to have a female preferably medium to long haired cat! It needs to be gentle with toddlers (as I have a 2 year old) and has to not like dogs ( I really don't care if she's friends with my dogs or not)but not be scared of them! She will be an only cat, and I plan on keeping her indoors only because of what happened to my Smokey I don't ever want to risk that happening again! So a cat that doesn't mind being an only cat would be good too, because I don't want her to get lonely for another feline! Thanks in advance everyone! cheer

PetSmart is a good place to look. They have cats up for adoption, and on the cat enclosure is a sign saying if the cat is good with dogs, children, and if they could be an "only" cat etc. They are always spayed or neutered when they are put up for adoption.

My meowmy almost adopted two cats when she was at PetsSmart (she had lost four kitties in Hurricane Kartrina and was VERY lonesome), when her cell phone rang and it was her sister, telling her there were a brother and sisters (my brother Louie and me) who would be ready to adopt a person in about three weeks.

Keep us posted.

Don't forget to check Catster! You can click on "Find Adoptable Cats" in the upper left corner.

You could also check with your local shelter and let them know what you are looking for. They may have the purrfect cat for you!

Someone else mentioned Pet Finder and PetsMart which are also good ideas.

Good luck finding your kitty!

Run your info through Petfinder. I just did and tons of matches came up. You'll definitely have no trouble finding a kitten. You have the choice of breed type (Domestic long hair), age, size, location closest to you, and even the option of excluding kittens/cats that are not good with children. Try it out! Lots of sweet babies came up.

If you want an only cat, why not look for a kitty that is 1-3 years old. That's a good age to be around children. Young enough to not mind them, but old enough to play with them.

I'm sure there's a shelter in California brimming over with kitties who need homes! There's a kitty on here named Dodger who I know can help you out. I will find his page and post it here.

This is Dodger.

I would definitely get a young adult kitty. Perhaps one with some Maine Coon in the mix. Abbie was the most gentle and sweet kitty I have ever known. She loved my daughter from the moment she was born and was tolerant of her when she became a toddler.

You don't want a kitten because there is too much of a chance your little one will hurt her. Toddlers are funny little creatures who don't know their own strength!

I would not try to find a pure bred kitty, just a kitty who meets your requirements. There are probably lots of them in the shelter, you just have to go and feel that bond. You'll know when it's the right one. You could also look on Petfinder. You can plug in the things you are looking for (female, length of hair, breed, age, etc.) and find many in your area. That's how I found Matilda.

Good luck. And I'm so sorry about Smokey. You're wise to keep your new baby inside.

Mom found both of us on PetFinder. If you get a kitty thru a rescue group, many of them have been with Foster Family's and they know the kitty's personality. They'll be honest with you, because they don't want the kitty coming back because of a "poor fit".
It's harder with a kitten, because there is no way to be certain what their personality will be. A young adult Cat already has their personality established, and it's easier to know if they're shy, social, and how they are with other animals.
Good Luck, let us know how it goes, please.
