Transport BURMESE SENIOR from SF to Kansas City or NYC

This is a special place for Catsters to help Catsters arrange for community transport of rescues or cats being re-homed. Even though we love our community, please remember this is the Internet. Be sure not to post personal information publicly or share it prematurely; always use your best judgment when working with people unknown to you. Thanks for helping our furry friends get to their furrever homes!

My friend in San Francisco has 2 Burmese and would like to relinquish
one. The primary reason is excessive vocalization. I have talked with
him at length about this and tried to offer support. Unfortunately, he
is set on not having him in his home.

When I visited my friend and met the cat--ARDISHIR--I did not find his
vocalization excessive. Unfortunately, that is neither here nor there
as he is determined to relinquish Ardishir. (As a side note, Ardi
slept with me under the comforter, purring away every night of my
visit. He is an exceptionally loving cat.)

Ardishir is 14 years old. It is not an option to send him to a shelter
as he is a senior and hence not readily adoptable. My friend has
considered having Ardi euthanized. Obviously, this is not an option.
Ardi is a sweet, intelligent, very affectionate guy who deserves a 2nd
chance. I would bring him into my home if I didn't have such an
aggressive alpha female.

I am reaching out to you for any thoughts/advice you might have on
transporting him. Ardishir needs to get from San Francisco to either
Kansas City (ideally) or alternately New York City. I have strong
connections in the rescue community in both of these cities and am
confident that I would be able to find him a loving foster and then
permanent home.

My friend spoke of "shipping" him to me as airline "cargo." With his
age and his tendency towards high blood pressure when stressed, I do
not see this as a safe and viable option. I have tried to find
alternative transport (outside of the rescue community) and the only
response I got was from a woman who could drive him for $625. I'm
sure my friend would be willing to make a generous donation, but I
know that he would not pay $625 and my fear is that he would have Ardi
put down.

This is time sensitive. I know my friend is at his wit's end.
Obviously, I'm furious with him about this but it's become clear that
there's no convincing him to keep this sweet, loving kitty.

I thank you in advance for considering this situation, and I look
forward to any thoughts you might have.

Hi Jennie,
Another Catster Mom-Ingen is the cat-had to be transported to her. I believe if you contact Ingens mom she may be able to put you in touch with the company that did it. They were from what I understand quite good.
What a lovely sounding cat! It breaks my heart that someone would decide this cat needs to be killed!
We're purring for him that his situation is a good one!!!!

the above was the company used to get Ingen back to Jen. I believe they were reasonable.
We don't have a car right now, but we would be willing to pitch in a little bit of money...all we have with 7 cats....but we want to see this kitty safe, too!

Can we all help?

Are you on Facebook? There are many groups on Facebook that help arrange transport of rescued animals. My other suggestion is to contact a Burmese rescue group: http://burmese.rescueshelter.com/

You're a good friend for wanting to help this person find a home for his unwanted cat. Not passing judgement on your friend, but I just can't understand people who dump an animal after so many years. Please tell him not to get any more companion animals unless he's willing to commit to them for the duration of their NATURAL life.

Shipping cats is easily doable, and not as cargo. I forget which airline, but one is better than others at shipping. It was approx. $200 from NC to AZ last time I looked, and guaranteed that the cat would be in climate controlled environment the whole time. If the flight was delayed, animals will be taxi'd around in an air conditioned van. Another big thing is to make sure there is water available, and should freeze half water so there is always some during the travel.

What about you flying and bringing the cat back yourself? You are able to have cats in-cabin for $125.

Yep, so

--> http://www.usairways.com/en-US/traveltools/specialneeds/pets.html - cats are $125 each way, so I'm sure a round trip flight is less than $625.

Also,
--> http://www.continental.com/web/en-US/content/travel/animals/default. aspx
Continental is the airlines I was talking about *I think*... they also do "quick pack" for pets, meanings "same day, airport-to-airport delivery with features designed to ensure an animal's comfort and safety." Continental also has tracking, personal handling, 24 hour live animal desk, and the climate control I was talking about. If anxiety and BP is an issue for that cat, ask a vet for a small anti anxiety for the road. A little kitty ativan or something, or even something as simple as one of those calming collars with lavendar.

Good luck, let us know how it goes.
