Save money with the Pet Medication Card

This forum is for cat lovers seeking everyday advice and suggestions on health-related issues. Remember, however, that advice on a public forum simply can't be a substitute for proper medical attention. Only your vet can say assuredly what is best for your cat.

If you need prescription meds or other supplies for your kitty, you may be able to save money with this discount card, called the Pet Medication Card (click for the link). It's very easy to use, just fill in your name and email and print off the card, and it can be used at local pharmacies (maybe not all, but it's worth a try). I believe there is also a version of the card for people as well.

I was able to get a case of 12 bags of Braun lactated ringer's solution (sub-q fluids) for $16.76 at a local Rite Aid pharmacy. At the pharmacy the case would have been about $37.00 or more without the card. My vet was charging $10.00 for one bag of fluids, or a case for $60.00. So using this card was a substantial savings. Also the Braun fluids I got are DEHP-free (DEHP is a chemical in plastics (fluid bags) which may have some toxicities) which is normally about 50 cents more per bag. So this was a super deal.

Some medications are just for pets and sold through vets (and some online pharmacy sites), but some humans meds and supplies are used for cats and dogs and can be obtained at pharmacies and are usually cheaper than getting from the vet already, and this card may be able to help save even more.

I found out about this card on felinecrf.org and there is more info there on how to obtain fluids and other supplies more economically.

Good luck kitty

There are other cards out there that you can use for pet medicines smile AAA (the car/travel company) has a prescription card for members that covers pet medicines. All can only be used at the Human pharmacy. Insulin that pets use (Lantus, Levemir, Humulin N, etc) are covered by the card way to go Pet insulins (ProZinc, PZI, Vetsulin) are not because they are not sold at Human pharmacies, only by a vet or veterinary pharmacy. The discount might not be very much for some types of medicines or supplies but it's better than nothing smile

I just saved about $15 getting a prescription for amlodipine (blood pressure med) using this card for my 18-year-old cat. Instead of $40.00, it about $25.00 using the Pet Medication Card. Again at a local Rite Aid. And again, a lot less than the vet.

I also want to mention that if you are looking to get sub-q fluids, they are not in stock at most pharmacies, but pharmacies can usually get them the next day. It also helps to have the NDC (national drug code) for things like fluids which aren't in stock, so the pharmacy can more easily locate them and order them. Felinecrf.org has the NDC for a couple brands.

One more thing, some pharmacists will resist this card and think it won't be applicable. One gave me a funny look. confused But be persistent, because this little card is fur real and you can some money on some items.
