HELP - my roommates overdosed Mutzi on Atenolol

This forum is for cat lovers seeking everyday advice and suggestions on health-related issues. Remember, however, that advice on a public forum simply can't be a substitute for proper medical attention. Only your vet can say assuredly what is best for your cat.

Hi all,

Sorry to come on here with this kind of post, but I'm trying not to panic. I've been out of town for a week, and my roommates and boyfriend have nicely volunteered to care for Mutzi. She has HCM and takes Atenolol 2x daily.

I left very specific instructions, including a chart that each person was to check off after giving her medicine so she wouldn't get double dosed. However, someone either forgot to check the chart/forgot to look at the chart, and she got two doses within two hours, between 8 and 10 pm last night.

I didn't find out until morning, and I panicked. Roommates say she seems fine, and I called a veterinary emergency hotline (my vet's office was closed). They said if anything was going to happen, it would have happened already, and that she is out of the woods.

I know this should make me feel fine, but I don't feel fine. Everything I've read says that if a cat OD's, or a person for that matter, on these meds, they should be rushed to the ER. I'm reading all these keywords like hypoglycemia, congestive heart failure, etc. Should I insist she be brought in? Am I just being paranoid, since an actual person at the ER told me I don't need to? Has this happened to anyone before?

Not to mention I'm super upset and blaming myself. Roommates meant well, but next time I'm hiring a pet sitter. I think when people don't have a cat with a health issue, they don't always realize how serious it is. I tried to make that clear when I left, but know now that I need one person who has dealt with or understands sick cats. I don't get home until Tuesday, and am trying to avoid panicking.

Glad to hear that everything is OK with Mutzi. But I suggest that when you get back home, check with your regular veterinarian to keep him updated and to set your mind at rest.

Welcome to Catster! welcome

oh gosh - I am so glad that Mutzi is ok. You know that I COMPLETELY understand your panic. I have even done that myself - did I give it to him? Which led me to this: Here is something you can try for next time - it's what I do. Get one of those weekly pill organizers, put Mutzi's pills for the time you will be gone ALONG with that chart. If a helper looks, and sees only 1 pill, then bingo they know- Mutzi had her other pill - empty- all good til tomorrow. I actually used to use the ledge of a cabinet by my tv. I would place Tig's pills for the weekend per day in a line, then I would be able to tell & it would remind my son to give Tig his pill. I use the pill container now, and keep a note stuck in the cabinet or on the fridge as a reminder. I would call your regular vet when you get back, and are calm - find out exactly what to look for, what to do if it ever occurred again, which it should not with that organizer. I know that it slows their heart down, so yes it would be a concern for sure. But now, take a breath, and give Mutzi a big hug when you get home! purrs, Tigger hug
