Natural Flea Prevention...Ideas?

This forum is for cat lovers seeking everyday advice and suggestions on health-related issues. Remember, however, that advice on a public forum simply can't be a substitute for proper medical attention. Only your vet can say assuredly what is best for your cat.

Hi All,

My cats are strictly indoors, but they do travel by car with us many times a year. Neither of my girls have fleas, but I've always used Frontline or Advantage II because my neighbor's cats had fleas and my guys caught them just from human-cat contact. I want to change that, and use a natural method since fleas are not an issue for us. I keep a very clean and tidy house. Any good ideas?

Wow, I must have say that my brain-to-typing skills were obsolete for this thread!eek Usually I make more sense than that I swear....Let me rephrase that.

My cats have had fleas in the past, having caught them from human-cat contact because my neighbor's cats had them....This only happened one time many years ago. Fleas are not a typical issue for us, but I'd like to find a natural method that would deter fleas from my home and kitty girls. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Momma's friend uses something called diatomaceous earth! It is made from tiny fossilized plants, and is a micro abrasive, which means it has sharp edges. When bugs breathe it in, it scratches up their insides and they die. The food grade version is safe to use around people, pets, and food. It can be ingested and not cause harm, which is good. It keeps out roaches, fleas, ants, and several other kinds of household insects. Here is a link to find out more.

I've definitely heard of this diatomaceaous earth. The only concern I have about it, is that silica, which is in it, can be a issue when inhaled in the lungs. It never goes away....Any other thoughts? Does anyone know of any herbal remedies that can be sprinkled or rubbed on?
