Atenol prescribed but causing wheezing/shrt breaths. Help!

This forum is for cat lovers seeking everyday advice and suggestions on health-related issues. Remember, however, that advice on a public forum simply can't be a substitute for proper medical attention. Only your vet can say assuredly what is best for your cat.

10 days ago, we took our Puddles to the vet due to sudden coughing and sneezing. Then she began short breaths and wheezing. The vet prescribed Atenol and now I realize the side effects are wheezing and short breaths....something she just came down with. Does anyone have any experiences to share or advice?
We are going to the vet again in the morning...but I need major information. Soooo frustrated and sad to see my devoted, overall healthy, sweet Puddles feeling so low. (She still eats and drinks...and is alert. But it is obvious, this is taking its toll on her energy.)

Please advise....Thank you Catster Family.

Are you sure it was Atenolol that was perscribed? Atenolol is used to treat HCM cats.
HCM is hypertropic cardiomyopathy, its a heart condition. I know because I have a HCM cat and
have done extensive research on it, as has my vet.

Atenolol slows the heart rate, dosage depends on the grade of the condition. Its Grade 1-6,
with 1 being moderate and 6 being severe. My cat is a grade 3.

Did your vet mention anything about a heart condition or a heart murmer?

I am not a vet, but never heard a cat being perscribed Atenolol for coughing/sneezing, which is
usually a URI. They usually just give antibiodics.

Anyhow, here is a link on Atenolol. It also mentions that if the cat develops shortness of breath
or coughing, to contact your vet right away. Which that is one of the signs a HCM cat would
develope, and that is a sign the cat needs to go to the ER, immediately.

I highly recommend you call the Poison Hotline, their number is also listed on the site, or
call the ER vet, immediately.

Something is not right. You were either not told your cat has a heart condition, which if he
does have, shortness of breath is an immed trip to the ER, or your cat has been given the
wrong medication for his condition.

Either way, contact the poison hotline or call the ER vet, like right now.

Best of luck, keep us posted.

We were told over a yr. ago, Puddles had developed CRF. Though she has shown no signs of slowing down.

I was told by my vet to give her Atenolol to slow down her blood pressure and she might have a heart murmur...even though the EKG was not run because the man who does this is on vacation. (NUTS...) We are waiting for his return.

I have no idea the level Puddles is except we were told to give this medication in 1/4 of tiny tablet once daily for high blood pressure...and the vet is worried her thyroid is overactive as well.

All I know is the fact, she woke up from her nap a week ago Friday, coughing and then weezing as she exhales. She had short breaths.

The medicine started on Sat. morning...just over a wk ago.
Sometimes she is stable and other times, not. Going to the vet in the morning....truly upsets us.

Does your cat have any hyper thyroid issues? Would this make the blood pressure elevate?

Will call the line you gave me now. Thank you.....

Ya didn't mention, she has all of the above, in the first post, mol, I thought she had the signs of a
URI, based on the info in the first post. big grin

She might have a heart murmer? Either she does or she doesn't, the vet can tell, when they listen
to the heart, that something is not right, some can even estimate the grade.

If your vet feels there is something not right with the heart, they should of taken x-rays, to see if the
heart is enlarged, and also to see if there is fluid on the heart or the lungs, which is not good.

They should also do a Wellness and CBC blood panel to see if all values are normal, of it there is
something else going on.

The next step is an ultrasound, with a cardiologist. That will determine if the cat has a heart
issue, if the heart is enlarged, and can properly determine the grade.

HCM means the left ventrical does not work properly. It lets in too much blood, or not enough, its
kinda like a swinging door, that does not shut properly.

If, the cat has HCM, they usually put the cat on Atenolol, which slows the heart rate, dosage
depends on the severity of the condition or the grade. They also usually give baby aspirin, 81mgs,
one every 3 days.

The cat needs to be on a high quality grain free feed, THAT IS LOW IN SALT, this is very very
important. The cat must also be kept stress free, that one is imperative.

My cat only has HCM, he does not have hyper thryoidism or high blood pressure, and I don't
know what CRF is, will have to look that up after work tonight, which I should be getting ready
for, instead of on here, mol, mol.

If, the cat has HCM, the danger signs are difficulty breathing, coughing, not hair balls, and
dragging one or both hind legs. That is a sign the cat may have thrown a clot, and that is a
immed trip to the ER.

If, they didn't do the x-ray or the blood panel, tell them you want it. Best of luck, gotta run now,
let me know what the vet said today. ((((((((((BIG HUGS TO YOU))))))))

So, how is Puddles? What did the vet say? big grin

If, she has a heart condition, another thing to be aware of, never let her be given Centrine, not sure
of the spelling, and have tried to look it up, so the spelling may be off, or it might be know as
something else. It is an antispazmodic, similiar to us taking Pepto Bismal for throwing up or
diarea. Centrine will kill a cat with a heart issue.

Found this out, the hard way, at a show, when another cat got sick on Sun, and they gave him
Centrine, which, in his case, it did work. Was not able to get ahold of my vet right away, so I OK'd
it. I got yelled at, mol, by my vet, said never never never let him be given any medication, that I
am not familiar with, without checking with her first, thats when she told me, it would kill a cat
with a heart condition, and that I got real lucky, that he didn't have a heart conditon, so thats how
I know. big grin

OMG!!! You were lucky! No, we were not told to use this medication. Whew!

Today, Puddles was her normal self...enjoying the ride and getting excited when we pulled into the parking lot. The site is developed for animals....as a Noah's Ark with a real boat and animals made of art....so it is very welcoming for animals...trees, flowers, nature runs, etc.
When we entered, the Vet asst and Vet were impressed to see her as her normal self.
Puddles was purring and enjoying sitting in the window seat for cats.
She actually let them poke her ...temperature (normal) and took blood. She was checked out and the vet said she definitely has
1. CRF
2. HAD high BP 10 days ago, but BP is NORMAL NOW. She never had high BP before 10 days ago. hmmm...
3. Has a heart condition...enlarged heart. hmmmm...
4. Over productive Thyroid issue.

Good news, she is still eating and alert... except for the few wheezing and coughing episodes the past few nights.

Good news, no diarrhea and no vomit.

Outcome: Prednizol (2 x a day) tiny amt. and again...Atenolol once a day. We are waiting for the blood tests results and we will return shortly.

My gosh, Puddles was so happy to be there, it was amazing how she was herself again.

The saga continues....

Sigh....

You are a wealth of information with all your experiences! We just want to thank you again for coming to our rescue and giving us advice and support. We cannot express how grateful we are for this!
Thank u so much for your kindness!

Why did your vet Rx prednisone??? There is nothing on your list of problems that would warant this. Why are you not taking thyroid medicine (Methimazole is the generic for Tapazole)??? Your blood pressure could definitely have gone from normal to high, especially with CRF and hyperthyroidism. Since you started the atenolol your pressure has returned to normal which is good but be sure they check your pressure every time you visit the vet, BEFORE doing anything else to you, to make sure it's not getting too low.
