She can have the surgery now, even when slightly ill, especially considering the circumstances. It is far better to have her spayed b/c of the danger of her getting out and not returning, even if she is pregnant; I would definitely go to another vet or low-cost spay/neuter clinic ( many only charge $30 or less). It is a sad fact that there is a huge pet overpopulation, and it really wouldn't be right to allow her to have kittens. If all else fails, it is far better to take her to a shelter than to have her be miserable and in and out of heat, and you continuing to get stressed over the situation. I would caution you, as someone who has worked in open-admission and no-kill shelters, that just because a shelter is no-kill does not necessarily make it a better option- some are great, and do wonderful work, and are responsible; others don't know there limits, are over-crowded, understaffed, and unsanitary, with animals stuck in cramped conditions for years. I guess I'm saying, even though its difficult, if all else fails I would take her to a RESPONSIBLE open-admission shelter if the no-kills that are reputable and you've seen with your own eyes say they're full- it would be more humane than dragging the situation on indefinitely. Please, do not do a free to good home ad or the like- I'm sure it works out sometimes, but, not to scare you, there are unscrupulous folks out there, even dogfighters who "adopt" cats and other small animals like this to use as bait animals. Good luck, and I hope you'll remember my advice in this difficult time. Things will work out, just stay calm. | | | | |
