Is it true that in America some cats are de-clawed?

It's me again....Tambolina......

I don't know....human people do what they want to do....and it is their shout.....so they can do what they want to all the natural stuff in the world.....but what do they want?.....I was at work today (Jan, here) and was sitting having a cigarette in my break-time (that's another story) and meditating on the stuff I have written on Catster.......WHAT DO PEOPLE WANT FROM CATS?

This ties in with my thread 'Are my human person's cats surrogates for the babies she never had'?

I'm going to start a new thread....'What do people want from cats?

Please reply to it.....

Anyone who expects a cat to confirm to human rules should get a dog! Cats are their own "people" with their own purrsonalities.

I had an issue with clawing when I was a kitten. I kept going after grandma's good couch. Nothing my mama or grandma did would keep me from digging in and scratching for all I was worth. then for Christmas I got a brand new kitty tree with all sorts of neat places to hide. That was the end to my clawing the couch.

I am so glad that my mama didn't use that as a reason to de-claw me! My mama thinks de-clawing is mutilation anyway and it makes her sick to hear of people doing it to keep their cats from ruining furniture and carpet and such. It's a natural instinct in cats to scratch. If you provide them with something that's OKAY to scratch on, they'll leave your things alone. For the most part... Unless you do something to make them mad...

My mama expects me to be myself and she loves me for who I am. I have health problems, I'm shy and reserved and can be as stubborn as hell when I want to be, but this just makes mama love me all the more. Inviting a cat in to your home is like taking in a new roommate. There's a certain amount of give and take that needs to be done to make everyone happy. As long as you know that YOU'LL be doing most of the giving and WE'LL be doing most of the taking!laugh out loud

Hugs & Purrs to all!

I'm from england and my mummy had never heard of de-clawing until she found catster...we've had a long hard think about it and we still can't understand why some 2 legs would want to get rid of our claws..i mean we're cats...we're hunters...they are our weapons and part of our charm...even if we do shred the odd sofa arm or curtains...it just makes you love us more!! wink

Being an American cat, it is sad that a portion of Americans care more about looks.

They don't like how it looks so they take it to the doc and change it.

Diversity is beautiful ... and so are claws hamster dance !

So many people declaw cats because of their stupid furniture. Reminds me of this poem by Walt Whitman:

I think I could turn and live with animals, they are so placid
and self contain’d
I stand and look at them long and long

They do not sweat and whine about their condition
They do not lie awake in the dark and weep for their sins
They do not make me sick discussing their duty to God
Not one is dissatisfied, not one is demented with the mania of owning things
Not one kneels to another, nor to his kind that lived thousands
of years ago
Not one is respectable or unhappy over the whole earth

Both I and my sister Teagan were declawed by our previous owners, before they abandoned us and we were found as strays.

We are fine now, though. I even catch mice! I have caught 3 unfortunate mice who came into my human's apartment.

People who want declawed cats should consider adopting previously declawed adult kitties like us. Most shelters have some declawed kitties who need homes. That way, no more cats have to be declawed, and some unwanted cats can find a permanent home.

Unfortunately Mommy had me declawed, that was before she knew what she was doing to me, she'd never had a cat before, and her lease insisted on it also, then, when she read about what declawing does, she was mortified and so very sorry she had it done. She says when she has another cat, it will have Soft Paws, even if she can't see well enough to put them on herself, as long as the paws are spared!
Kinda late for me, though frown

Holy Katz, declawing sure is a hot topic around here!

My former owner had me declawed on all four paws!
What a nightmare! My new Mistress was shocked and upset, but more shocked and upset that my former owner's son wanted to shoot me, but that's another tragedy!

There are vets who will do it, and vets who will not. The same as there are vets who will make "convenience euthanasia."

It is up to animal guardians to choose not to declaw, to educate others about the facts of declawing and to lobby your state legislators to outlaw declawing.
Which as already stated is banned as being inhumane in many countries.
