Is it true that in America some cats are de-clawed?

Hummmm...thinking This is an interesting and sickening topic. The thought of seeing kitties declawed makes me feel sick. We live in a country where I think it is illegal. Yay for that.
Our kitties can go out side but also have to run of the house. We have a cat door, most kitty's in our country live indoor and outdoors, but then it's fairly safe here (no predators).
The cat doors great, we don't have litter boxes, only when we are sick or were young kittens the litter boxes got dragged out.
As far as one kitty mentioned about dragging stuff into the house. The cats are not allowed on the tables or benches, as kittens they were told a stern NO and then put on the floor. It seem to have worked, well at least when the hoomans aren't at home MOL.
Besides, the dirt from our paws are cleaner than when we had litter boxes, as the kitty litter would stick to our paws or I would roll in it, MOL.
Funny enough I smelt worse when we had the litter boxes as I would sometimes smell of poo, if I got it stuck in my paws. For some reason I don't have that problem when I go outside. I'm a clean kitty I'm always washing myself, I don't like horrible smells
I laughed at one kitty mentioning we are not social, MOL just as the hooman read that. I (Sam) waltz in the door announcing my arrival and was asking for attention. I love to get my pats and my coat is supper soft, and the hooman thinks I smell great. I love the smell of fresh washing and love to get that all over me, or the smell of fresh flowers. I even pick them and drag them into the house for the hooman. I've done this a few times now, She loves my flowers my favourite is the red ones from the bottlebrush tree. One time it was big enough that the branch had two flower heads on it. The hooman wishes she had seen me carrying that one MOL.
We also have heaps of different types of scratching post around so there is no reason to scratch the furniture, and we don't seemed to have any trouble with our claws. Even the hooman lets us pat her face. We are all very gentle in our house and wouldn't scratch the hooman on purpose, (only if we get a fright and we spring off but that is extremely rare).

Anyway back to the declawing issue..... It seems a lot of you are against it. What do you think ... can we push for the law to be changed and make it illegal to declaw a cat? I suppose it has to start some-where what do you all think?
Does anyone know how to go about it?

First of all I would like to say I am not a de clawed kitty. But in saying so its not because meowmy is against it. It may shock most of you here in this thread, because it would seem everyone on this thread is against it.
Im not de clawed because it hasn't been an issue with me. I tend to stay to my scratching posts and pads, and some times meowmys hands MOL.
My meowmy's sister is a cat lover has been since she knew what cats were, and she always has her cats de clawed. All her cats are spoiled and loved. She has had lots of cats in her time. None of them are less of a cat because she did this. They all act fine, are fine and love her very much. None of them have problems with there litter box or daily activities.
Yes I have read all there is to read on the web sites.
There maybe alot of cats in shelters that are declawed, but there are alot of cats in shelters period. So you can't say the owners that do that to correct a behavior still abandond thier cat. Some do, but they are probably the kind of owner that would of abandoned the cat anyway.
Thats just my opinion, just like everyone elses.

I'm sorry that anyone finds it acceptable to mutilate ANY animal. I find it hard to believe any cat lover who has read and seen photos of what declawing really is would ever do that to their cat. If for any reason a human can only have a declawed cat in their home they should adopt one that has been abandoned. There is no reason to declaw more cats. Period.

Declawing IS mutilation. The only reason that a cat is declawed is because of a human's desire to have it done for THEIR benefit... not that of the cat (yes, in some extremely rare cases it's done for the health or well being of the cat, but that is just not normally the case). I hope that anyone that has routinely declawed their cats has only done so because of ignorance. I also hope that anyone that thinks about declawing their cat does real research about what it is and if they truly think that they cannot have a cat with claws in their home that they will find an already declawed cat to adopt. It is our responsibility as humans to do what is best for the creatures that are in our care. They are at our mercy and will and we should never take advantage of that.

I think part of the problem is that many novice primates looking for a solution to scratching don't know declawing involves removing a whole joint. They also don't know they can train us to put up with having our nails cut regularly with a set of normal human nail clippers and that they need to set up a scratching area they day they bring us home just like they do with the litterbox.

Primate doctors sometimes declaw humans who get reoccurring infected ingrown toenails. They do this by killing the root of the nail. The toe is still there, just smooth. My friend with declawed cats was sickened when he found out it involved amputating whole joints. He thought they would just do something so the claw wouldn't grow.

On the other hand there are hundreds of thousands of cats put to death every year and, setting the stoopid landlords aside for a moment, people with suppressed immune systems cannot have cats with claws. In that case many more cats would not be adopted and you have to ask yourself whether you would like to be forcibly disabled or dead. confused

But I live in a state that issues cat hunting licenses so the "disabled or dead" argument may have more bearing here. I'm not FOR declawing, mind you, but if that's the only way to get a home.... I dunno.

I guess I don't know what I'm saying, really. I would like to think I would rather live a full life as a survivor of torture than be shot in a ditch but as neither has happened to me I can't really make an informed decision.

BTW, I have claws and so does everyone in my family. They are neatly trimmed.

Loki--OMC!!! You're my idol!!! I live for your broadcats, er, broadCASTS.

I am SO happy to hear that everyone in your family has neatly trimmed nails. May I be so bold as to ask if you trim your nails yourself? I ask because on another thread I'm pursuing the topic of "How many of you kitties had your toofies brushed today?", and I was wondering if you also brush your own teeth. Clearly you are a feline of most uncommon abilities.

I look forward to your next broadcast...

I would never have Kit-Kat declawed! Declawing isn't like trimming fingernails. It removes live tissue and can take a long, painful time for the nerve endings to heal afterward. It restricts a cat's ability to do what comes naturally. Also, if a declawed cat were to escape into the wild, its only weapon would be its teeth. I am very against it!

Meow, my buddy Binky and I have all our claws and we're keeping them. Mommy clips our nails if they get too long (which is annoying), but that's it. We live in the US, but our mommy is from Germany where declawing for non-medical reasons is outlawed and punishable as animal cruelty. Even though it would be allowed here, she would never do such a thing to any cat and would prefer it to be outlawed here as well. She got really mad the other day at one of her co-workers who had their cat declawed and she's happy she could convince another to try out soft-paws instead of declawing.
