little weirdo!

i adopted genie about a month ago from a bengal breeder. i have other cats, all dsh. i was not at all prepared for this cat. ive been to cat shows, met the breeds, and even had a friend who had cornish rex. i thought i knew what i was getting into with a purebred.

i hate to say it, but sometimes i just cant stand genie. she gets on my last darn nerve non stop. i thought Tiny was bad, genie is 10X more annoying. once she fixes on something she will not stop. she gets on the countertops where she is not allowed, and she knows shes not allowed because if she sees me she runs.

she is downright nasty and crazy about all food. she even bit my foot trying to get to a peice of dropped cat food. Its come to the point where when i eat meals she has to be locked up, or else she will take the food of my plate run and growl. everything has to be locked up from her because she takes anything food like away and swallows it. she has to be fed seperate at meal times becayse she causes chaos.

and ALL my cats HATE her. Even sassy, who loves all cats, will chase her all day, growling, fluffed up. from sassy this is shocking, i have never, out of all the foster cats ive had, seen sassy chase them down (not playing, being mean)

at night i have to put genie in the spare bedroom, because i cannot sleep with her around. she upsets all the cats so all night is non stop growling, non stop her clattering into the dishes, non stop her fighting with sassy. i put her away in the spare room with toys and treats, but about an hour into it is her non stop meowing. all. night.

ive tried ignoring her, ive tryed playing with her. i cant have toys or treats around her unless shes alone.

this cat is cute, and friendly towards me, but she is a pure pain in the rear end most of the time.

its not like im not use to active cats. tiny, sassy and angel are allways playing, into something. but genie is hardcore to the point of agressive and obsessive over everything she does.

shes only 6 months old. im hopeing this is a phase. if not, i dont know if genie is a good cat for my house. frown

if she dosnt calm down, or i cant find ways to calm her down, im afraid all my cats are going to start a peeing war. they downright cant stand this cat. and they have accepted all sorts of foster cats in the past.

Welcome to the world of Bengals. One would hope the breeder had warned you, but just so you know Bengals are very, very active. Always. She might be a climber for good, as bengal cats love to climb and do sporty things. They are very muscular and very keen on exploration.

I know you said you are used to active cats, but Bengals are the Ferrari of the cat world, and when they play, they go all out.

gracie, its not just being active. she obessess over everything, and if you get between her and food, she bites you. if she was a dog, this would be the point she would be going back to the pound.

the cats have tables, counters, tall posts, ect. to climb. the only place there not allowed is the counter with the stove and the dishes (its all on one side) they all know this. so its not like they are stuck to the floor 24/7. the only reason there not allowed on the stove and sink is for obvious safety reasons.

please dont misunderstand, its not the playfullyness. its her obsessive food stealing, the growling, the biting, and the fact that all the other cats cant stand her is whats getting to me. she gave me a pretty nasty bite on my toe that drew blood..i wasnt even taking food from her, i stepped on a loose peice of cat food and she went nuts getting to it.

theres a point where i have to draw the line and say, these things are not allowed here. she may climb on whatever she wants except the stove, and she is fed her food seperatly. but id like to be able to sit down and enjoy dinner without her going tooth and nail with me over it!

She pretty much knows better then to mess with me, but my boyfreind and other guest she wont listen to.

i just want to know if there is a way to tell this cat the rules, or will i have to lock her up in the bedroom everytime i want to eat dinner?

and no, the breeder DID NOT tell me a thing. if i would have known this cat would bite me to get a peice of food i would have passed for another breed.

what the breeder did give me was fleas and roundworms. so much for finding a responsible breeder at a cat show.

sorry, sorry. i need to calm down. i know i sound like an idoit when i say all this...but ive waited for a purebred for years. ive raised many cats, including tiny and angel, who are half oriental. they get into everything, steal food, ect. but they know how to listen to me, and basicly know the rules.

this cat reminds me of a 2-3 month old kitten who has never lived in a house. DO you think that maybe theses "breeders" kept her in a cage all her life?

what makes me wonder is the fact she has NO housemanners, and when she does stuff that adult cats dont do (steal food, ect) she did it right in front of me (tiny steals food but when im not looking)
also at first when i got her, she didnt know how to jump. i know it sounds weird...but insted of jumping up, shed put her paws on the thing then dragg herself up. after a month she no longer does that.

that combinded with the fact this breeder gave me her coverd in fleas and full of roundworms, makes me think she was just shoved in a cage or small room all her life.

so i guess what im trying to ask is, do you think once she matures a bit and learns the rules will she calm down?

Hi Genie, Don't know a thing about bengals but your description of how she came to you from the breeder just does not sound right at all. Taz came from the shelter and was covered in fleas but didn't even have roundworms, I would hope that a reputable breeder would keep their kittens in better condition than being infested with parasites! How did you find the breeder? Did they tell you how long she had been kept with her mom and littermates?

i met the breeder at a cat show. she had show cats for sale, genie was a throw away cat, not suitable for show for whatever reason.

she was 5 months old at the time, no idea what happend to her between then and kittenhood.

i was sold with a spay contract, which genie was fixed 2 weeks ago. im waiting to see if this women is going to front her papers or not...suppoidly there in the mail.confused

Sounds as if this breeder gave you a cat that (as others have said) must have spent its life in a cage. At this point the suggestion I would make (and consult with your vet), is to ask the vet if Prozac might help. My cat Louis was very aggressive and bit and scratched. The vet gave me Prozac (it comes in a cream form that is rubbed into the cats ear.) It made a world of difference in his behavior, we only used it a couple of months. With his getting older, my taking him for walks on a leash and the medication it helped him to calm down. Now he is a big snuggle bug and loves to meet people.

Hope this is of some help. Please keep us posted.

So sorry to hear of your troubles...

I don't know much about Bengals- have you checked the Groups for them? Most of them are inactive, but there was one "Bengals are Crazy" that had activity in October- maybe someone there could tell you what to expect.

Maybe you could contact other breeders? I would imagine that they could give you some advice. I think you need support from someone that knows about these guys.

Just thinking outloud really...
