Well its been some time since I've updated Buffy's page.. and it's for Bitter Sweet reasons.
When I first got Buffy she was a baby.. and grew up around my 2 dogs. My Beagle Clover and my Chihuahua Sprite. She got along with them great. She would PLAY wrestle with my Chihuahua. But as she grew bigger and bigger she started to change the way she would "play" with Sprite.. Once she out grew him (he is 4 lbs.) she started "play" attacking him. Treating him like a prey mouse rather then a play mate. She would stalk him, pounce on him biting him on the back of the neck. It got bad.. Sprite would constantly be hiding from her all the time in his dog crate shaking.
I lived in sort of an apartment (shared living space) and I had one big huge room I lived in, it was 2 rooms made into one. So I had to keep Sprite and Buffy separate by room dividing doors when I wasn't home. But when I was home she wouldn't stop terrorizing him. I tried all kinds of corrections with her and making sure she got plenty of attention from me.. I had lots of toys for her to play with as well as plenty of furniture with carpet matts on it for her jump and play on.
I hoped she would grow out of this "attacking" Sprite (Chihuahua) but after almost 2 years of living this way Sprite's body couldn't take the constant stress and he became physically ill. A normal bacteria that lives in the intestines became over stimulated (populated) and cause severe illness in Sprite. Vomiting with Blood and Diarrhea with Blood. And when this happened it was constant nonstop. He had to be brought to emergency vet.
At the time I wasn't sure if Buffy or something else was causing his stress levels to rise making him sick. Well after lots of medicine and care Sprite recovered. I was still looking for other solutions to stop this behavior in Buffy.. but as time went by. I was starting to think if I can't stop this behavior I will have to think about finding her a new home. Well I put that off and tried not to think about it, as I loved Buffy alot. Well after a few more months of not finding a reasonable solution.. and Sprite once again became seriously ill Vomiting Blood and Diarrhea with Blood.. I knew I could no longer ignore the situation. It was not fair to make Sprite live his life in constant fear and stress.. and it wasn't fair to Buffy either.
Buffy was just a cat doing what came natural for her. I realized this was part of who she was and there was no changing that.. well it was suggested by a vet I could use medication to calm her.. but I thought that was wrong. So I started to seriously look for another home for her. Well Luckily My Sisters told me her Friend wanted Buffy. Wow.. this was just what I needed for Buffy. Someone I know to take her.. as I wouldn't let her "go" to just anybody. And the country area I lived in was LOADED with unwanted cats.
This was the BEST I could hope for, for Buffy. BUT the day they came to take her was a very painful one. I couldn't believe my little crazy cat was leaving forever. As they pulled away in the car I broke down crying watching them leave. My sister heard my cries, stopped the car and hugged me. I needed that. Well I missed her a lot for quite some time.. but as time when by and I got to hear updates on her.. I felt better about my choice.. Sprite was living a happier Stress free life and since then has never become ill like that again.
I got to visit with her about after 1 year.. and it was great to see her doing so well in her new home. She is very well cared for and loved deeply.. I couldn't ask for a better out come.. though I still wish I could have kept if she just could have got along better with Sprite.
But it was all for the best.. So that is the Bitter Sweet of it.
