Arrival Story: I had lost three cats in less than a year and my best friend suggested I get a kitten. All my cats to that point had been strays I'd adopted into my home years ago and they were quite old when they died. I was nervous about getting a kitten--I hadn't had one in so long--but in July 2005 I went to the Humane Society and there was Tess, this beautiful three-month-old kitten, put out for adoption for the first time that very morning.

Bio: "Tess was bizarre from the beginning and she remains so. Even after initially acclimating to my house, living with my other cat, Aldo, and my elderly dog, Maggie, she clung to some very odd habits. She hid from all visitors. She never meiowed; indeed, she didn't utter a sound her entire first month here. Rather than lie on the furniture, she lay underneath it, back deep against the wall. As time passed, of course, she grew more and more comfortable. She was great friends with Maggie. After Maggie died just before Thanksgiving, Tess pretty much immediately became pals with my new dog, Noelle. Aldo had taken Tess under his wing and taught her the facts of life. Tess has meiowed only twice in her life, both times when she was very young, but she no longer remains a silent cat by any means. She makes many sounds--chirps, squeaks, etc.--and she *always* has something to say. She's not a jumper at all. She gained her weight early and fast, and I had to change the cats' feeding schedule. She still runs and hides from everyone but me. About midway on, I finally figured out that she had been feral as a young kitten and this helped tremendously in understanding her. She retains many of her feral behaviors even now, more than a year after domestication. That's perfectly okay by me. Tess is one beautiful, affectionate cat, and who could possibly ask for anything more?
