Arrival Story: Cooter started out as a stray I started feeding and looking out for in 2005. I met him that summer, he would hang out with the neighborhood cats who came to visit me, Luke was one of those cats. I started by throwing dry food at him over the fence, that led to me sticking a can under the fence and he stopped running away and stayed to eat. Finally he showed up on my deck and would eat there. I remember the first time he let me pet him, it was almost 3 months after, I was doing a bit of weeding and Luke came by to say hi and get some rubs, Cooter followed and let me pet him. I was so happy, I had soft spot for him, I guess I felt bad that he was so skittish (he was the only one in the neighborhood like that at the time). I had then taken Luke in full time and noticed Cooter started hanging out on our deck more and more. When it started to get cold, I insulated a box, filled it with straw and fleece to help keep him warm. I would also coax him with food by the door, put the bowl down, grab him and drag him in while getting the hubby to close the door. Took a few days before he started coming in on his own all the while still uncertain of his decision. As the weeks went by and the weather started getting colder his time inside started to get longer. I would open the door and in he would come, after eating he would hang out for a while, often it was to sleep on a comfy blanket. It took a while for him to wander the house and actually get up on the couch to sleep, but he finally started to feel comfortable enough to stay inside with us for consecutive hours. He walks around your legs and asks for love, he has even allowed me to snuggle him by picking him up and putting him on my belly for chin rubs. One of the best things was that finally after 2 months of coming in for a few hours a day he purred when we were petting him, it was a great day for us!
Bio: The original goal was to domesticate Cooter so he can be adoptable; it was a work in progress, he was still skittish after 2 months... I loved the little guy but the hubby said two cats was enough. I finally got him spayed, it only took 3 appointments. It's like he knew and would not come home for dinner, and it was at a time when he would not stay in at night. The vet said he was absolutely gorgeous and said he was 2-3 years old, which confirmed what the neighbors said to me as well when I inquired. Finally after 4-5 months the hubby agreed he was here to stay (not like he was going anywhere anyways, but I had not told him). After Cooter was spayed I decided to make it visible upon looking at him that he had a home, so collar and tag shopping I went. This little guy has Houdinied himself out of so many collars that I could have probably supplied the neighborhood. I thought I would get some back, you know with the tag and all, but alas no. So now he wears Beastie Band collars that have Velcro, the quick snap ones were too easy for him (and I fear using the belt style for fear he would get stuck and not get out). I also got him microchipped, I breath a little better but still worry when he is late for dinner.
In late spring/summer Cooter started spending the whole night inside, I love that he would curl up on the couch, go to sleep and stay there all night. He loves his morning head and cheek rubs, he rolls on his back teasing me with his tummy (which I still can't touch without a swift swat). He is my first indoor/outdoor cat, I get a little scared when he is out and I am always relieved when he comes home. He has come a long way from only 15 minutes inside to a full evening and night, but I don't know if I could ever make him fully indoors. Currently we live in a cul-de-sac and there is a no car alley in the back so it is safer than most city neighborhoods, so for now I am 'content' that he is outside in THIS neighborhood, I guess if we move he will have no choice but to remain indoors permanently.
Cooter has his ways of letting us know when he wants back out, he will sit in front of the door and meow incessantly for one of us to open the door. If we ignore him he starts to wander the house yowling, which usually makes us come to his rescue. He has even started to paw on the patio door, he is our little drummer, this annoys his dad so much that it guarantees the door being opened for him. However during the summer he has other ways of telling us he wants out, he sticks his claw in the screen and rattles the door. This winter Cooter has decided that when he wants in, he wants in now, you see he usually just sits by the patio door waiting for you to notice him, now he goes to the second patio door by the couch and stick his claw in the screen and rattles, then stares at you all sweet and innocent. He watches you get up from the couch and runs to the main patio door to be let in.
For the longest time I had not seen the little guy use the potty, I was hoping that he would start so in the winter he would want to go out less. I then learned he just likes to go potty outdoors. He knows very well how to use the litter box, and this winter on cold days he willingly used it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Well my pawrents did it, again: they grounded me, again. I am to be an indoor kitty for the next few days, a prisoner all weekend long. Mommy says maybe I could go out on a harness like Luke, but I am to be supervised. I guess they didn't like the fact that I was gone since Sunday... Daddy was walking in the alley looking for me, and after a few calls I came out from the bush and I let him carry me home. After coming thru the door tonight I went straight for my food dish, then I went to rub mommy's legs. She picked me up and cuddled me lots telling me she missed and was about to start making posters and calling all the shelters if I did not come home. After she lectured me and she looked me over a little bit to make sure I was okay. I have been a good boy this evening, I've been following her a round a bit and I even hung out on the couch with my pawrents.
I hope after my sentence is up that my probation isn't too strict...
My pawrents are furry proud of me tonight. I was a brave house protector. You see there was a ring at the door and I went with mommy to investigate, she picked me up and there was mommy’s friend who I know, she gave me a rub on the head. Then I saw someone else I know and then I saw this creature with him. I immediately started growling, and hissing. Paste was nearby and he came to see too. Mommy put me down and I puffed up to three times my side and continued to growl when it moved. Paste was right by my side, we were guarding the house in case that creature made it past mommy we would be ready. Finally it left and I lost my Mohawk and puffyness and all was well. I got treats for being so brave.
