Arrival Story: Mina actually belonged to the daughter-in-law of our landlord's wife. When they moved to a bigger house they left Mina temporarily with our landlord, who owned two big dogs. They were going to come back for her after they've finished moving and settled everything.
That time, I've just arrived in the US as a new immigrant to join my husband. And I've always seen her around the yard. Our place is just behind our landlord's house, you see. She was always friendly and affectionate, not timid at all. The first time I came in contact with her was when I saw her by our gate, just standing there as if waiting for something. I was watering our bonsai on the balcony then and when she saw me, she meowed like she wanted me to open the gate for her.
I've always liked cats. In fact, I have several I left in my homeland but they are mostly outdoor ones. So when I opened the gate, Mina strode right in and went straight to our door and into the living room. She had acted like she owned the place and if she can speak, she would have probably told me: "Geesh, I've been waiting like forever. What took you so long?" And this amused me.
Mina stayed in the garage at night and out of our landlord's house during the day, mostly to avoid the dogs, I guess. And her favorite hang-out place was our house (hmm...probably because of the canned tuna I gave her).
Now don't get me wrong, though, she was perfectly cared for by our landlord's wife but she couldn't spend time with her since she also had to care for the dogs. Anyway, I always had to carry Mina back to them so she could stay in the garage at night.
One day, I carried her back for the nth time and gave her to our landlord's wife and we got into talking about stuffs. All the while, Mina kept struggling in her arms like she wanted to get down or something. She kept squirming and squirming until she was able to jump out and ran as fast as she could back to our house. It was the most surprising thing. I went back and tried to cox her out but she was hiding under our bed and wouldn't come out. I felt embarassed and apologized to our landlady.
She just smiled and said: "You know what, it looks like she likes it there with you. So let me get her dish, bag of food and cat litter so she can get settled."
I couldn't believe it really. But she assured me she would just tell her daughter-in-law that the cat had found a new home. Boy, was I relieved and not because of any pet restrictions that my landlord might remind us of but because of the fact that Mina would be moving to a place near hills and mountains.
At first, I didn't want to endear myself too much with her because the pain of seeing her go can be quite disconcerting. But I was actually worried that she might become coyote food if she'd go romping about in her new home.
I was really thankful to have her. I'd like to think that she had chosen us as her humans instead of the other way around. Now, she's part of our family of two iguanas, a python, two turtles and a couple of gold fishes.
Oh yeah, my husband was actually complaining about taking her in at first. He would complain that he is actually allergic to cats and their hairs. But months have passed and he had secretly grown fond of her giving her most of the nicknames I've listed here. Now he would play with her and give her a lot of attention until I had to tell him to stop bothering the cat. Hehe.

Bio: Our landlord's wife asked me once if I changed her name to anything and I said, "No, we decided to keep her name as it is." We met her as Mina so she'll always be Mina even though we don't call her by that name. She answers to kitty cat, mar-mar and cat-butt nowadays. =)
