Paws Up: Marriage Equality Becomes Constitutional Right

“No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family.” — U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy

Kennedy wrote this as part of the U.S. Supreme Court opinion handed down today for the majority that included fellow justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan. As a result of the ruling, all states will be required to license and recognize marriage between two people of the same sex.

We see this as similar to the adoption of cats, because it’s all about the freedom to love on your own terms. No matter what breed you are, or what other people might think of you, you deserve a good home where you can be happy, alongside whatever other critters feel like family. We salute the members of the court who acknowledged this human right.

We at Catster are overjoyed that marriage equality is finally a reality in the United States. Because of the ruling, all our friends and family — gay, bisexual, lesbian, trans, and straight alike — can legally marry no matter what state they call home. We look forward to seeing how the cat lovers among the soon-to-be newlyweds incorporate cats into engagement announcements, wedding themes, and the ceremonies themselves.

With that in mind, here are a few photos we found on Instagram celebrating the court’s decision or otherwise experessing LGBT solidarity.
