Blind Cat Rescue Expanding to Include FIV+ and FeLV+ Cats

One of my favorite cat charities is the Blind Cat Rescue and Sanctuary in St Pauls, NC. As many of you know, I grew up with a blind Siamese cat, and you’d never have guessed she was blind to look at her. Certainly, if you read “Homer’s Odyssey,” you know that blind cats can be downright amazing. Yet, many blind cats surrendered to shelters are euthanized on intake because they wrongly perceived to be unadoptable.

Blind Cat Rescue and Sanctuary saves these cats from certain death, and will either adopt them out to a furever home or keep them in residence as long as necessary.

Now, they are seeking to expand their facilities to do the same great work for FIV+ and FelV+ cats. Like blind cats, these cats are often euthanized by shelters on intake because they are not considered to be adoptable. Yet many can live very long healthy lives. My mother-in-law had a super sweet formerly feral FIV+ cat who lived to be about 19 years old. He was in good health throughout his life.

So here’s the deal. Blind Cat Rescue is hoping to expand to include FIV+ and FeLV+ cats by winning a funds through the Pepsi Refresh Project, through which Pepsi is giving away $1,300,000 each month to fund great ideas.

You can help and it won’t cost you a cent. Here’s how:

Build a shelter building for FEL/FIV+ cats

We wish to build an alternative option to immediate euthanasia for cats with feline retroviruses, including both feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency viruses, (FEL/FIV+) we will create a safe haven for infected catswhere quality care and life enrichment are the primary concern.

Cats infected with FeLV or FIV may live for many years. A decision for should never be made solely on the basis of whether or not a cat is infected.

We have the land, we will be building a shelter building that will be built to provide care for 24 cats with heat, ac, water, quarantine area and visiting area.

Expand our outreach program to educate the public about the dire circumstances of special needs cats face in shelters and foster an understanding that these cats can enjoy a high quality of life, live a good life span, and provide rewarding companionship for their owners.

We are thrilled to be a contender for a $50,000 grant from the Pepsi Refresh Project. We are thrilled at the opportunity this grant will provide for us to build a second building to save FEL/FIV+ cats!. Imagine the lives you will help save simply because you took the time to vote for us!

We have a new exciting approach to October’s voting. We have formed a “partnership” of other animal organizations. They are all in the running, and together, we are pushing to win $625,000! By having all our supporters vote for each of these organizations daily, they will do the same for us. By pooling votes, we hope to all bring each other to the top in our categories!
