Have you noticed an increase in animal-print clothing popping up in stores lately? It’s no accident, as CNN.com recently reported on the explosion of animal-inspired fashions — from the cat dresses of Victoria Beckham’s latest collection, to the black cat who appeared throughout Jason Wu’s collection for Target — that have been going mainstream after building up momentum over the past few years.
The article also points to two Etsy sellers, I’m Your Present and The Petite Chouette, who rely heavily on adorable, kitty-inspired imagery to add appeal to their handmade designs. Eva Kischel of the Petite Chouette creates quirky tanks and tube tops, along with her popular Cuteness Dress that turns wearers into virtual felines.
I’m also enamored of her ingenious Lovely Kitten Tee, which replicates the look of your favorite species on the sleeve of a custom-made T-shirt.
Kischel says that her love for animals inspires her designs, which she sees as her own personal form of activism. She tells CNN: “I think wearing animal-themed clothes also demonstrates that you are against fur or other animal skin in fashion, which is a good thing. I personally like this trend because it simply makes me happy to ‘wear’ my favorite animals without hurting them.”
