Between writing about the science of dog farts and puking-cat gravy boats, I’m starting to feel like Catster and Dogster’s resident expert on pet excrement. Now, it’s time to move on to the poop. Today, the question is: How do you make cat poop not merely tolerable, but stylish?

Here’s someone who’s at least giving it a try. Poopy Cat is a Dutch company with a fairly simple product: cardboard boxes for your cat to poop in. You sign up with Poopy Cat for a subscription, and it sends you a new box every week or so. (You throw out the old one.) It’s really hard to imagine anything harder to dress up than a cardboard litter box. Just writing the words makes me fight back the yawns.

However, Poopy Cat’s latest ad has caught a lot of people’s eyes: starring five super-faaaaabulous diva cats named Marilyn, Jackie, Diane, Cleo, and Grace, it’s a playful and strangely raunchy video in which the cats strut their “cattitude” on a cardboard catwalk. Pretty much everything except the cats is made of cardboard, including the microphones. And it’s the first time that I’ve seen a truck called the “Pussy Wagon” and not been creeped out by the sheer crassness of it.

Obviously, there’s a few nods to the now-defunct pop burlesque group, the Pussycat Dolls, too. But other than that, I’m just not sure what to say that would do it justice. It’s definitely one of the stranger cat advertisements that I’ve seen so far.

Nevertheless, it’s still a cardboard box that Poopy Cat is selling, and I have a strangely persistent overflow of those in the basement. And then there’s the fact that it’s not exactly the eco-friendly solution to your cat-poop problem. Still, the point is moot, unless you’re in the Netherlands; if the video does make you long for a Poopy Cat subscription of your own, you’ll have to wait until the company expands internationally.
