Maggie the Kitten Was Born Without Eyelids, Get Implants

The rescue cat was thrown in the trash, but Maggie was saved -- and now she can blink!

Blinking -- it's something you do all the time without a second thought. But what would life be like if you couldn't blink? Your eyes would get dry and irritated. And what if someone threw you in the garbage because you didn't have eyelids? You would be devastated and in incredible discomfort.

As a kitten, Maggie regularly need eye goop cleanings.

That's exactly what happened to Maggie. Thanks to all your comments on my Top 5 Facebook Cats, I was introduced to new, inspiring kitties. The world is full of positivity if you just open your heart to it, so thank you for the chance to meet so many new Facebook felines! I haven't had a chance to check out all the cats just yet, but when I stumbled across Maggie, I think my heart grew.

Maggie as a healthy kitty -- you almost can't tell she was born without eyelids!

With her tortoiseshell cardigan and little white shirt, I wondered how someone could throw out a cat who obviously needed help. Certainly the responsibility of a special needs kitty is not for everyone, but there are so many rescues especially for them that I could only suspect it was an act of laziness.

Fortunately, Maggie was found by some very supportive and dedicated people, who then reached out to similarly kind folks. Through fundraising efforts, Maggie underwent her first surgery to implant eyelids in January of this year. The process involved freezing off her hair and eyelashes to protect her new eyelids (isn't science amazing?), and while Maggie is still in recovery, she is well on her way to a brand new life. Beyond a touching story of rescue, Maggie's story highlights the good we're all capable of when we decide to work together.
